I'd like to take my GF to a "posh" restaurant for her bday, rather than the usual chain places. Something around the £100 a head for dinner.

As I'm relatively new to the area, I have no idea where to go. Any recommendations?

Fishermans lodge has gone downhill a ittle. My advice would be Jesmond Dene House, on jesmond dene rd - relatively new, and fantastic food, and also very posh... will definitely impress, or the black door near central station (can't think of the name of the road), also very good.

Yeah Fishermans Lodge used to be one of the best restaurants for consistently ggod food, when the Italian guy and his wife had it - it used to be my favourite for entertaining foreign clients - since Maxfield/Maxwell whatever he's called (the ex-Sage guy - why do all of these software guys suddenly fancy themselves as restauranteurs?) took it over it's gone down hill - the main problem is it's very patchy - I've had the odd good meal there but I've had some stinkers recently - very unpredictable - I'd avoid it.

The trouble with Jesmond Dene house (owned by Terry Laybourne and his crew - of Cafe 21/21 Queen St fame) is that it feels like what it is. i.e a hotel restaurant - service is poor and the food varies from course to course, again you might hit lucky - but it's not a special experience - the view amongst everyone I know (and ME) is that the current best "fine dining" restaurant in the North East is "the Black Door", as passenger gez said, it's on Clayton Street West. You won't be disappointed - it's won a few awards recently I think including a Remy Martin award and also an award for the best Newcomer restaurant in the UK.

Well, decided not to wait till the birthday as the fishermans lodge seemed pretty reasonable price wise, so we are booked in for Tuesday, I'll report back.

The Black Door looks nice, so that could be a go-er for the birthday.

Yeah I'd heard they were trying to encourage people back by dropping their prices considerably (they had totally lost the plot beofre this - trying to charge London 2 star Michelin prices for a place in Newcastle)

Hope it's OK.

It's GOT to be Louis' on Osborne Road, Jesmond. Absolutely the best. And you have Osborne Road to start/continue the night on.

...... or the restaurant on top of the Baltic, McCoys. It's absolutely world class, with fantastic views.

...... or stay in the Malmaison on the Quayside and eat in the Brasserie there. Awesome Steak Frites. (Eggs Benedict starter is a must). lick

Your joking right?...................The Baltic is one of THE worst restaurants in Newcastle!.....yeah the view is great....but the service is terrible and the food mediocre at best....Conde Nast magazine, and many of the "foodie" web-sites agree that the Baltic is terrible - it's getting a really bad reputation now on all the BB's - the word on the street is because the McCoys (who are riding on the back of a WAY over-inflated reputation of their abilities - or lack-of) paid the council WAY too much money for the licence and now can't make it pay....SO as is always the way - they cut back on the quality of the Chefs, waiting staff, and raw materials! If it wasn't for the location that place would have closed by now.

Terry Laybourne should have been GIVEN that restaurant and it would have become a beacon for foodies in the North East!

....and Louis on Osbore road.....?.......don't even get me started on that shower.

It must be different when you go regularly....

...Louis' have always welcomed us with open arms. (Tip well and ye shall be rewarded.)

McCoys was fablulous, but that was on the one and only time I've been.

Spud-U-Like......??

Why not pop into Waterstones and have peek into the book on North East Dining (i cannot recall the name of the book). It lists all the local up market places and shows various menus etc. Not just Ncle area, but the whole of the NE, should you fancy a little drive out too.

Plent to chose from around the region.

If I'm honest I don’t think there are that many good restaurants in Newcastle most are just mediocre places that are ok for a Saturday night out, not special occasions. I have just been on a bit of a shopping weekend to Leeds and stopped in the Crab and Lobster for lunch on the way down which was nice.

I think one of the better places to eat is the Star Inn too we usually stay when we go there. But it's not exactly close to Newcastle.

Cracking food at the crab and lobster and if you stay over they used to have the 'hidden beer tap' for unlimited drink along with jacuzzis outside the bedrooms in the garden. Owner can be a little bit obnoxiuos though.

Slightly cheaper but how about the "Pavillion" at Iveston. Very good chinese and cantonese food.

Yeah the Star Inn is consistently very good (1 star Michelin)- well worth the trip down - and the drive over the top of hills can be fun if the roads are quiet!

It is far, far better than the vastly over-rated Crab and Lobster - and you can stay in the "hotel" part across the street - only 8 or 9 rooms but with a very special feel - good for a romantic soujourn!

Not quite yet but by the time I'm hopefully . I was in there about a month ago and Damien Aspinall was having dinner with his family at the next table.
