anyone live around these parts ?

i am looking to move this year and researching areas

took a look at billingshurst, lingfield, dormansland, forest row, crowborough & edenbridge at the weekend but pretty much discounted all of them for some reason or another

i notice now that from horley you can get a fast train in 32 mins so thats a big reason for me looking round there. specifically id be interested in the charlwood, rusper, leigh, newdigate area (funnily enough where i learnt to drive)... where i can get somewhere rural with a bit of character and land. The properties seem nice there (whereas in horsham, horley etc.. the houses seem to be new builds on estates which id rather avoid).

would be very interested in hearing anyones views on this part of the world
thanks
Rich

Strange I posted something similar just over a year ago, could have been longer though.

Still we discounted Horley, on the counts of too close to the Airport (if the wind is in the right direction the aviation fuel comes your way) plus the planes fly right over the Balcombe Road.

Have you looked at East Grinstead? and surrounding areas, Like Copthorne etc...? Granted you may not find the house of the 1930's style but the houses are not too bad.

Queue, Cossie, Holbyhead, Chelseatractor and more.... jumping in...

Good luck.

Edited to add, have a look at my original post, may help aswell www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=141&t=166894

Charlwood etc is very near the airport, and if the 2nd runway is ever built will be even nearer if not underneath it!

Whats wrong with Crowborough? (Guess who lives there!!! )

thanks guys

not looking to live on horley
but rather rusper/newdigate/leigh/betchworth area
they are beautiful places (from memory)
of course i would commute from horley but dont really care too much what horley is like

crowborough is amazing value but we went there and it felt very far out for us and too far from friends & family. it took and age to get back to the M25. Also, it wanst quaint enough for what i am looking for.. it was too large.

I live outside Horley, but am moving soon. Horley itself isn't great really. To the north is Reigate which is a good town but expensive.

Charlwood is a nice place and is to the North of the airport, the new runway is most likely to be to the south. There is a very good infant school in Charlwood which my son is going to.

Bilingshurst is where I'm looking at moving to perhaps even West Chiltington and Storington. These are great towns and near the south downs and the coast.

Horsham has lots of nice areas around and still good for London. Loads of PHers are in East Grinstead.

I'd probably avoid Crawley. Maidenbower is more new property and wife swapping.

i went to billingshurst but was taken by it

lots of ugly new houses, a dull high street and soon as i got out my car for a walk the first thing i noticed was two ~19 year old mums pushing pushchairs

BUT, wisborough green just 2 miles west has got to be one of the prettiest places ever, i would certainly look at a house there if the right one came up, with a view to commuting from billingshurst

Bit further south?
Haywards Heath, Hassocks or any of the villages at the foot of the Downs?
Advantage is that the further south you go, the more likely you are to get a seat on the train!
Easy access to A23.

The Dolphin used to be a nice pub, not been for a while though. Don't remember much else in the village. Also not too far from Boxhill station and a reasonable commute (obviously depending on how you define reasonable)

Perhaps not in Bilingshurst town itself but as you say the surrounding area has some nice parts.

I'm from Burgess Hill and my advice would be not to live there, as it's full of tts. I escaped to Manchester.

Ditchling/Hassocks area can be nice, although a bit cliquey and expensive.

Lindfield (near Haywards Heath) is okay.

Apart from that, dunno. I think Horley (is that where the Bolney Stage pub is?) is REALLY close to Gatwick.

Amberley - pricey, but I would like to die there (not just yet though).

I'm in Southwater near Horsham, and it's great. Not far from the coast, on the side of the A24 and about five minutes from Christs Hospital station which is around an hour from London Bridge/Victoria.

Horsham is much the same, except bigger.

House Prices aren't bad either.

If you are planning to commute, whether by car or train, I would scout that as carefully as you look for a property. The transport infrastructure has been overloaded for years as Gordon and Tone send money to all corners of the globe except the South-East.

I live in Charlwood. Lovely place, very small though. Nearest train station is Ifield. Crawley is close enough for shopping but far enough if you know what i mean. Close to gatwick for the trains and planes, Great big Tesco's nearby. (no jokes!)

Also live in Crowborough, and it is a nightmare getting to the M25. Either across the forest and sit in traffic up the A22/264 to M23, or via TWells which is no better.

Other half lives in Ashington, and surrounding villages are great. A24 links well to M23, and it is much quicker to get to M25. Plenty of character house and cottages and cheaper than around here.

I live in Oxted, the advantage is you cannot hear the planes here unlike Lingfield ect. (10 mins away), and many houses are older and have good size gardens. Trains to London good, you have underground parking at Morrisons next to the train station. About 40 mins to Victoria and London Bridge. J6 M25 is less than 10 mins drive. Good schools and pubs around too. It's a bit "old school" round here though, and keep up with the neighbours mentality. Definately not what you would describe as "multicultural".

I never sit on the A22/264 or in T Wells! If wanting to go west I go across the forest, left at Wych Cross, through to Turners Hill, then towards Crawley before turning up a lane to turn up just off the Copthorne Roundabout. Alternatively out towards Groombridge, but turn left before getting there to go to Hartfield, then Edenbridge, Oxted and J 6. Both routes around 30 minutes to M25. Going east I go out towards Groombridge, Penshurst, then usually Leigh and on to A21 at bottom of Sevenoaks hill. I reckon on being at the Dartford tunnel in 35 minutes or so.
