Although I never believed i could ever win the monthly competition seeing the talent on here, I have always had a genre in mind if i were to choose the title....

April 2007 topic - PANORAMIC

This is a topic that really inspires me, and i cant wait to see some of the entries. Personally I would like to see photoshop etc used as little as possible, relying on the view captured.

Good luck guys, have fun...

Regards, John.

I've only just discovered this forum so hope you don't mind me adding my 2p

That's a tough topic! My dictionary confirms my interpretation as a "wide, unobstructed view in all directions" but also that it could be an "unfolding of events" - did you have that in mind?

Here's a pic I took looking down on Gaudi's Sagrada Familia from the hill of Geull Park in Barcelona, using a D70 and 70-300 zoom. Not a great photo but I was impressed how massive the church appears compared to the city - and the main spire isn't even started yet! It's not really panoramic though. I have a better photochopped one of the rooftops of Paris somewhere...

As per dictionary.com, definition is:

1. an unobstructed and wide view of an extensive area in all directions.
2. an extended pictorial representation or a cyclorama of a landscape or other scene
, often exhibited a part at a time and made to pass continuously before the spectators.
3. a building for exhibiting such a pictorial representation.
4. a continuously passing or changing scene or an unfolding of events: the panorama of Chinese history.
5. a comprehensive survey, as of a subject.

The bit highlighted in bold is the jist of what i am looking for, however anything within the defintion is perfect.

P.s. I really like that pic by the way...

Nah - should be fine. Check the definition again...

"1. an unobstructed and wide view of an extensive area in all directions but not including mountains or other highland scenery.
2. an extended pictorial representation or a cyclorama of a landscape or other scene, often exhibited a part at a time and made to pass continuously before the spectators. "

Ahem - worth a try.

Messing about with stitching software - hence glitches.

One from Ireland last year.

Have been experimenting playing round with various panorama software I've been downloading trying to find one that works properly, some of what I managed to get: (Just trying that autostitch program mentioned up the page now, seems best so far )

Dunedin (NZ) looking from Signal Hill lookout:

The view from my flat:

Mt Cook from near Mueller Hut:

The Rees Valley, Otago NZ:

Sebastopol Bluffs near Mt Cook:

Mike Turfus rolling the zero car out of last years Otago Rally:

Lake Wakatipu (Queenstown NZ) from Wye Creek:

Silverpeaks area, Otago NZ:

(bottom photo isn't stitched, just cropped)

Some of the photos I took a while ago with a panorama in mind, but never got round to trying the stitching thing until now, some I took recently or just now. Some of them I quite like, some aren't so good, any advice/hints/etc?

ETA: click for bigger images, some of the ones that had obvious join lines I've replaced with autostitch panoramas which gives much better results.

Interesting comparison between autostitch and one of the other trial version downloads of commercial stitching software (forgot which one I used):

I've never tried much in the way of panoramas. These are about the only two I have:
