Nurburgring photography advice.
Discussion
Hi,
As the title really
I'm off to the 'ring hopefully in a couple of weeks time and plan on getting as many good shots as I can. Are there any particulary good spots and are they easy to get to? My 'daily' lens is a Sigma 17-70 on a 400D and I also have a Tamron 70-200 (cheap & nasty purchase when I didnt really know better..).
Also, are there any places on the way there that I should really stop off for?
Also also...any general 'ring advice also gratefully received!
Steve

If you want advice about driving the 'Ring, there's no better place to start that Ben Lovejoy's site. Should be easy enough to Google.
I will try to provide a few tips on photography spots but I've only been once so I'm sure there will be better advice around.
First of all, if you have time it might be worth a stop at Bruges on the way if you like quaint touristy cities and/or chocolate. Spa is a very easy detour en route too. I'd never been so it was worth even just stopping at the gate and peeking at Eau Rouge.
For the 'Ring, get hold of a 'Ring map which can be bought at the petrol station close by if you can't get one beforehand (there are versions on the 'Net). If you can take a mountain bike, that is worth considering as there are numerous trails which get you to bits of the track which would otherwise require a long walk (its very big and hilly!). These are shown on the map.
Easily accessible places for photography include:
Bergwerk - Take L10 up from teh 257 near Bredscheid and look for small track on the right in about 700m. You can park right next to the corner and then climb up to a marshalls post on the outside of the corner. Good shots close to the cars here.
Planzgarten - there is parking nearby and then you can stand next to the track and watch them coming over the yump (the first one).
Mini-Karussel - requires a little bit more of a walk, but you can get good shots of cars coming through the banked corner.
Brunnchen - large car park. You are a bit further from the track, but there is a good view of cars coming through the 2 Brunnchens and then away.
The top of the Hatzenbach has good views on the outside of the corner of cars coming past the old pits and starting the Hatzenbach. Parking is a little more tricky here.
I think there are loads more places but these are the ones I tried and are ones which are easily accessible with a car. Exmuhle also has parking and viewing terraces but I didn't try it.
If you're going for the 24hr, then many of these may be somewhat more tricky due to crowds.
It's worth checking out the museum at the GP circuit too.
When I went I only had an 18-70 and I got a few shots which were worth me having but not worth showing. The spots above get you plenty close enough for a 200, but low light may be a problem at times (Bergwerk is under tress so avoid if it's cloudy). The other spots are reasonably open.

Interesting fact: Ben Lovejoy is also really into photography. He posts a lot on www.photosig.com
