Hello,

The electic seat on my '94 XJS has stopped responding. There is a little 'click' somewhere when I push the buttons but the seat remains still. It is did/does get pretty damp inside the car (ahem) I guess this might have something to do with it.

Any ideas? What are the obvious things to look for?

Thanks

There was a technical bulletin for late model XJS that the electric seat fuse blows out easily and should be replaced with a heavier one. This happened to my 95 XJS...changed to the fuse the bulletin called for and it has not happened since.

Jimmy-Jam, your link requires a password, you'll have to do the old copy and paste to share your All-Dater info..smile

I don't have the number for the TSB on the seat fuse issue but this is basically what it says:

Power seat: The power-seat fuse repeatedly blows, so Jaguar suggests replacing the original fuse with one having a 20-amp rating. (1995)

cml, If you are getting a click but no movement I would suspect there is a problem some where between the seat relay and the seat motor, a loose wire or bad ground maybe, could even be the motor itself.

If the fuse was bad I don't think you would get any kind of a click. I can't remember if 1994s have seat modules like the newer Jags but if they do then there are potentiometers on the seat rails so that the module knows where the seat is located at any given time. If one of the potentiometers goes bad then the module shuts down seat movement as it gets confused. This may also be the problem your having, but I suspect it's simply a problem between the relay and motor.

I have a 3 1/2 year old S Type 4.2 V8 and it has just been inflicted with the same fault: adjustment works manually but not automatically. I also get a click. The memory does not work either. I suspected it may be a fuse job, but manbe it's more serious. I was planning to leave the fix until the next service but if it's more than a fuse I may not wait. Any way of identifying which fuse? R.

Sorry, I thought I did paste the page. scratchchin Yea, I thought about the click, but hoped it was just the button mechanism.

I no longer have access to JTIS or I would look it up for you, IIRC the front seat fuses are located in the fuse box on the passenger's side kick panel (US models) I think it's the same for UK (passenger side) as they swap sides of the car for RHD & LHD. There should be fuse box maps in the owner's manual and on the fuse box lids.

Perhaps I should add that the passenger seat still works - which might put a damper on it just being a fuse.

The front seats will be fused separately.

If you are getting a "click" one would assume that the relay for the seat is working, that would mean that the fuse is good. Your problem it would appear is somewhere between the relay and the seat motor. I notice you mentioned the car interior is damp, corrosion is an electrical systems worst enemy.

Probably not any room under an XJS seat but you could try jumper wires to the seat motor connections, hit it with 12 volts and see if it moves or the motor runs, that would rule out the motor and point to a problem between the motor and relay.
