Firstly , thanks PP for responding to my similar request on another forum ,
However , I didn't hear from anyone who had done the above job.

Here's the diagram showing the parts (no.20 and 13) that need to be replaced , mine are rotten with metal worm and have to go.

I know it's a common problem , and many of you 993 owners may only notice the supports are shagged when the bumper starts to flap about just rear of the wheel arches. I've been told by my local indie that it's best to get them done before they fail completely as this makes the job a lot more complicated (This could be mech b.s. , I don't know ..)
Has anyone attempted a DIY , and could they give me some hints of the sort of job I'd be taking on?
I can see where the lower brackets for these supports are, but where the upper bits attach to still remains a mystery biggrin

yep, I did mine on the C2

get a small child, a can of stella and a stick

get the child to fit the supports whilst you drink the stella and threaten to beat the child with the stick

HTH

TBH - it's a 2 spanner Haynes manual rating job, did all 4 of mine in under an hour

Hi Bally
Mine have been flapping for a while now, and this year I have resolved to get them sorted!
Local OPC quoted me about £400 a couple of years ago (they say the whole bumper has to come off) but I thought B*ll*x at that price I'll live with them a bit!

I think the upper mounting point is on the heat sheild, but thats partly corroded on mine as well now.

I've talked to my local blacksmith about fabricating some stainless steel brackets for me this year to sort it (my local Indie tells me this is a popular fix) so I may go down this route this summer. I planned to take some pics underneath somebody elses Minter first if I can find one to see exactly how they look before we attempt the job.

If anybody out there has a very low mileage 993, a close up picture of your pristine brackets/mounting points would be much appreciated!

regards

As above except I substituted the small child for girlfriend and gin and tonic for stella.

2 10mm nuts at top from memory, and phillips screws at bottom from memory. The ideal tool for the job is the £30 Halfords 1/4 drive socket set I keep touting that ALL Porsche owners should own, will take you next to no time provided you use a well fitting screwdriver bit on the screws, and wd40/wirebrush the bolt threads that the nuts screw on to.

And the dealer is talking rubbish, worse case scenario the bumper flaps more and more it won't fall off, and even if all the supports disintegrate they are no harder to change than when new.

Ah , maybe what the techie meant was that if I waited til my heatshields were knackered it'd make life more difficult.
Am I right in sayin that it's bumper (or exhaust) off in order to dothe shields?

Btw W.O. , I 'invested in a lovely set of Halfords pro sockets and spanners , so thanks for that .. Now I'm just itching to get em all scratched and oily like you real men.biggrin

S.E. .. Thank you for me guffaw on what is otherwise a pretty mundane day ..
Bah humbug.

do I have to take it apart to photograph them?

I took the rear reflector apart last week, and I don't want to dismantle the back of the car again hehe

I got some from my local specialist Strasse, took them home, gave them a couple of coats of black Smoothrite.
When they fit my RSR exhaust boxes they replaced the brackets whilst the car was up on the ramp.
It was a warranty job as they supplied the car last year so I don't know what the job would have cost.

They may not be expensive from Porsche, I just made a new set of mine out of stainless tube, you should be able to do without taking bumper off, exhaust boxes may have to come off though, I was spoilt with the '64 as the back box would remove in about 45 seconds!

if you took the exhaust off maybe, but you can't take the bumper off to fit as it needs to be mounted to screw it all together IYKWIM??

no, you can get them from a few other places including breakers (have a look in 911 & PW mag) but the difference in price is nominal IME

I had mine replaced today at Autobody Tecnic in Langley....two struts either side.....the parts cost about £70 per side.

I watched the job being done and the bumper does have to be removed to replace I think the larger of the two struts...the job took about two hours.

One of the larger struts nearside had completely failed and consequently I was getting a fair bit of "flapping" and rattle noise over 75MPH from the nearside rear quater. All the other struts were pretty much shot as well. Now my rear bumper is solid as a rock.
