The Death Bogle of Pitlochry is the only one i know - here is a version from http://www.freewebs.com/scottishghosts/apparitions...

On the road leading out of Pitlochry heading northwards, a grim spectral figure has been reportedly seen. People who know of the existance of the ghost known as the Death Bogle are very anxious to avoid it, for it is said that those who have come across it and have been touched by its icy cold white fingers will meet their death before long. At the turn of the 20th Century, legendary Ghost Hunter Elliott O'Donnell spoke of witnessing the sighting of the Death Bogle himself. Whilst a young man, Elliott O'Donnell spent many hours in Pitlochry and regularly took lodgings with Flora MacDonald. During one particular stay O'Donnell, a keen cyclist, after travelling back from Loch Tay arrived in Pitlochry just before 10 pm. Keen to admire the last moments of light, he stopped at the old crossroads and started to soak in the atmosphere, when quite suddenly he became aware of a strange presence which appeared to him as a ghostly column of light in the middle of the road. As O'Donnell by now very frightened, watched the apparition, he also became aware of a horse and cart coming down the road with two passengers. O'Donnell realised very quickly that the apparition and the horse and cart were going to meet. On seeing the phantom, the two passengers, a farmer and boy became very fearful and from O'Donnells description, would appear that the two passengers very clearly recognised what was standing blocking their path. O'Donnell watched as the boy pleaded with the farmer to keep away from the spectral figure, by now the horse had halted infront of the phantom, then suddenly it turned and galloped down the road with the phantom in hot persuit. As O'Donnell watched the horse and cart being chased by the phantom he could see that the spectre was becoming shapeless and that it seemed to be reaching out to the two passengers.

O'Donnell in a state of fear jumped back onto his bike and cycled back to his lodgings as quick as he could. When arriving back he immediately told Flora MacDonald of what he had witnessed. She then warned him of the spot and told him that the spectre had been seen several times. She said that if any person was touched by the thing would die shortly afterwards. In the early 20th Century there were a few reported sightings of the Death Bogle but not in recent years.

Perhaps not quite what you're after, but the one thing that stops me in my tracks every time the thought of what could've happened crosses my mind is this..................

If you'll indulge me a bit of a ramble.

About two and a half years ago, we'd, ('we' being my Wife, 18 month old Son and myself.), been visiting my Wife's parent's in a little village near Aylesbury. We live in Scotland and had discovered that by far and away the best time to travel is overnight as the little one would fall asleep and so, eventually, would my Wife which left me to hike up the mostly empty roads. Very pleasant and have made very good time under those circumstances on many an occassion.

So sometime around 6 I think we load the car up, switch on the DVD player for Boy and set off up the M1. At this point I should make you aware that the car I was driving wouldn't make the whole trip on one tank of fuel so I'd banked on stopping somewhere in Cumbria on the M6 to fill up.

We'd travelled all the way up the M1 and cut across the A50 to Stoke, (my preferred route to avoid Birmingham.), and headed up the M6. Unfortunately by half 8 'Boy' hadn't fallen asleep, so as we were in or approaching Lancashire I reckoned it'd be a good idea to fill up sooner while he was awake to save waking him later.

It get's a bit hazy but we were 'making good progress' and had decided Charnock Richard Services would be the best bet and as we approached we were in lane 3 of the M6. There was a fair bit of traffic in lanes 1 & 2 so in order to gracefully leave the motorway at our chosen exit I elected that the best bet would be to accelerate to pass the traffic to ensure plenty of room to manouver <sp?> across the three lanes. (One more thing to add here is that at this point I'd considered skipping the exit and carrying on to the next services but decided against it.). I will admit to briefly travelling at very high speed to carry out this manouver.

Once we'd exited the Motorway safely, I pulled up in the car park and opened the car door. Now from leaviong the carriageway to opening the door I'd say would've been something like 30 seconds, certainly less than a minute anyway. As I opened the door I heard the sirens of a number of Police cars and automatically thought they were after me but realised they were travelling southbound so we proceeded indoors to freshen up and get ourselves something to eat/drink.

It never really dawned on me but while we were in the services the northbound traffic reduced to a trickle then almost disappeared completely.

I needed to pop back out to the car to get some baby stuff for 'Boy' and found the car park to be full of ashen faces people many of whom were on the phone. I managed to over hear one of them.

It turned out that some suicidal idiot was travelling south on lane 3 of the northbound carriageway. The police cars I heard were on the southbound carriageway either pacing him or trying to warn of the hazard. No more that three minutes previous we had been on a direct collision course with him. Sadly he ploughed into a car with a family on board shortly after. Fortunately they survived but were fairly badly beaten up. He died at the scene.

Now if our boy had fallen asleep like he usually had done then we wouldn't have stopped at those services. Also if I hadn't opted to stop at those services and accelerated past the cars to the laft of me we'd probably have stayed in lane 3 long enough to have been at serious risk.

Sorry for the ramble but I don't think it's a story that can be abridged.

It sends shivers down my spine and makes me thank my lucky stars every time I think of it.

The spooky thing that really haunts me, (and I've only ever told my Wife this.), is that about 15 minutes before the incident I could have sworn I saw a car coming towards us in lane 3. It was one of those blink hard and rub your eyes incidents.

(Before I get flamed, I'm not in the habit of driving continually in lane 3 even though it might sound like it!)

ETA :- BTW, the road was shut for six hours. Words fail me to describe the feeling of driving up the M6 with absolutely nothing on it and knowing there's carnage and a family in fear of their life only a mile behind you.

Rod, thanks. That was one of the most chilling reads I've had in a long time. As a Father myself, that would have scared the living sh!te out of me.

As for the 'vision' you had coming towards you, well, those are not that uncommon. There is some sort of name for them, can't remember what though.

At the risk of a tangent here, many, many years ago (late 1970's), a family who lived a few doors down from my wife were wiped out in a similar manner. The bloke pulled over, tired, let the wife drive, and she went onto the motorway the wrong way, and killed the lot of them. For many years after this, the house they lived in (Council House) had some real problems keeping tenant's. You might take a guess, in keeping with the spirit of the thread (bad pun, sorry) as to why.

The link road from the M2 to the Gillingham roundabout was supposed to be haunted years ago for a short while. Even got reported in the Local rag with people spotting a ghostly figure. Some where even quite weird, wonderful and outlandish descriptions......................

........until the culprit with a white sheet was caught running about.hehe

Not had any problems on the roads (thankfully) but my sister's house is haunted.

I can assure you I am as sceptical as the next man (athiest with it), but I've spent time in there on my own and it's fecking creepy. I don't even know what it is, but it chills your very spine, and something inside you is saying get out of this house. It didn't help me when my sister said my neice was asking who the lady was who watches over her at night (this is many years ago now). Turns out an old lady died in that room in her sleep. I won't stay in that house on my own, and my sister got it exorcised!

Same kind of story in a way, well what I recall of it.

A mate of mine told me about this a few years back. Well he was doing quite a considerable speed (least 130/140 say) on the motorway one night in lane 2 with nothing else on the road.

From what I recall he couldn't say why he done it, but just felt like he should slow down and so decided to come off at the next junction (there's a few go to the same place roughly where he was going to), so let off and pulled into lane 1. Shortly after doing it he passed a guy, sitting, just sitting bolt upright in lane 2... he wasn't the only one in the car at the time so wasn't just his imagination.

So you can imagine he was a bit disturbed by this! Thought never crossed my mind that it was other than some suicidal nutcase (don't quite believe in ghosts entirely), but glad he didn't get a chance find out either way.

Testing on the airfield at Gaydon years back, could have sworn I saw a chap stood in an old fashioned military uniform wearing an officers cap holding a clipboard or something as I drove past. Checked the mirrors and nothing to be seen.

Got back and asked a few others about it and was told its common to see him, all very creepy. Numerous sightings of this chap from what they said.

Same here as with the OH too. But.....one of his friends has said that late at night when drving down the A22, him and his brothe in the car, they have come over the slight brow of the hill, over 100mph, to see a man standing in the middle of the road. They boht saw him, and the driver slowed down, thinking that he was going to hit him.

I am not surprised on that road, as there have been a lot of accidents on the road.

Thanks so far people, for your stories, glad I didn't read them last night!

I know that with me, there are a few local roads that I hate driving, the other one is, when I have left something in the car at night and have to go and get it, there is something that really spooks me about it! Can't explain it though!

One day years ago I was about to turn right in a filter lane, late at night when no one was around. For some reason I decided not to go and waited despite it being deserted. A few seconds later a car flies through the red light at very high speeds. If I'd have gone as normal I would've been t-boned. Really freaked me out at the time and I still see it as a very close call

Of course it could be that you've sent a friendly ghost, who cares for and watches over sleeping children, straight to hell?

Yep, and my exhaust sounds brilliant against the high walls alongside it.
