Chaps,

Is it against the law to stop and wait on a Taxi rank, and pick someone up, if your not a taxi?

The reason I ask, is that I dropped my father off to go and collect a rather heavy item from a shop, but the closest place to the shop was on a Taxi rank on the opposite side of the one way road. (being a thoughtful person, I didn't want to double park, eventhough the road is wide enough for 5 cars or so)

I was there for no more than 3 mins, engine running, and still in the car. I'd left approx 20 metres from the front of the taxi rank, with only one taxi waiting.

A second taxi pulls up behind me, and went ballistic that i was in his way, and he was going to call the police.

Is it against the law to stop there?

Here is a quick picture to make it a little clearer

The yellow line is the entire taxi rank, the red splat is my location, and the red box was where the only taxi was stopped, bar the one that came up behine me.

Thanks

Nat

According to google :

"Parking in a taxi rank by a vehicle other than a licensed taxi is not permitted and is subject to a fixed penalty notice".

However i'm yet to see the first police control room to say "what?? ohno! is there someone parked in your taxirank for 2 whole minutes?? We'll send 5 units and the armed reponse straight away mr taxi driver!!"

Plus the fact that most taxi's don't care about where to park to pick up/drop off, often creating dangerous situations i don't think they have any right of moaning at you.

I would just ignore them.

I got shouted at by a cabby for doing this once.

He didn't care that half my rear tyre had gone due to a puncture, and this was the only place to stop in the high street...

Tosser!

That says no person shall leave a vehicle. The OP stayed in his vehicle.

Indeed, I was in the car, up to the point the taxi driver leant on his horn for 20 seconds or so, and I got out the car ask him was his issue was.

That isn't what it says, read again. The vehicle HAS been left in the taxi rank.

To the OP, for goodness sake don't get so worked up over it. The taxi driver was an ahole (in my humble opinion wink), no point in letting it play on your mind.

Well I think it's fair to say that you were in the wrong however reasonable your behaviour was. I'd like to think however that any copper who turned out would use some common sense and tell taxi man to stop being so bloody childish.

Taxi drivers can be a bit obstreporous, <sp?> when you use their 'ranks'.

Years ago I got permission from the local, (to where I was at the time), Police to use the taxi rank to load/unload some heavy goods from my vehicle on the understanding that I was considerate. So like the OP I stopped my car as far away from the end of the rank as possible so there was planty of space.

Imediately after I parked and was getting out of the vehicle, a taxi stopped behind me obstructing the road and blasting his horn. I consulted with him and recieved a barage of expletives and orders to move the car. I showed him the permit I'd recieved from the Police and left it at that. I continued to go about my business and he then pulled up so close to the driver's door of my car that you couldn't get a fag paper between the cars and he stayed there still obstructing the road even thought there was plenty of room in the rank.

Not wanting another confrontation I climbed in through the passenger's door and left. What a pointless exercise!!
