Drive that way a lot as I live just of M3 J3 and see plenty of people drive past at more than 50 and wonder the same. That said, it's often the case that if you're coming off the clockwise M25 or the M3 from London you are brought down to 30-40mph at the start of the cones thereby earning yourself some'credit' to go over the 50 for the latter part of the 'experimental layout' (long bloody experiment if you ask me!)

Hi DPX. This is what the Highways agency is doing there......unfortunately it is going to be permanent, by the looks of it

I don't know if anyone's been caught on camera there, but it's turned getting to the M3 coastbound from the clockwise M25 into an utter nightmare at anything approaching busy times; the junction just cannot get cars on to the M3 anywhere near as quickly as they're arriving from both the M25 and the Chertsey junction.

It can also be quite dangerous when the rest of the M25 is freeflowing as you get people trying to get out of a stationary queue into 60mph traffic, or vice-versa...

They're utterly rubbish at telling anyone about the trial aren't they? I was wondering fvor ages and then read the thread a few months ago. If they just said 'This is a trial etc...'

bit of a p.s. from my post above (and slightly off topic, sorry!), but nice to see a fellow 'Liz 111R owner, Frimley111R.... Take care through those speed cameras, all.

My understanding of this is that there are holes under the motorway,so they are investigating that. But as we use that section of the M25 everyday it is bloody annoying and completely pointless

i think the resultant layout (it was covered in the telegraph a few months back) will be a single lane for the m3, and twin lanes coming on from the m25, with everything held to 50 to help 'flow', rather than everyone from the m25 trying to get in from the left-hand lane

Has anybody ever been caught by average camera?

I know the ones they had up on Edinburgh Bypass during roadworks were totally fake. I sped through them many a time at 70 (limit was 40) for the safety of the workers who were not there at night

i drive along the M25 down to the M3 more or less every day and it has made my journey longer and more dangerous.

I now take backroads to avoid the M25/M3 completely.

I did email the highways agency a while ago and they told me it was to alleviate the pressure for the lorries merging onto the M3. I then asked why it stayed at 50mph for atleast another mile after the junction and was this not just a stealth tax, to which i never got a reply!

You are absolutely correct. I used to commute to Basingstoke from Heathrow last year and the dreaded specs were there in their temporary guise. Not suprised to hear they are still there; no doubt they still have the temporary line of red cones to keep the trafic in the correct lanes and to help the ANPR get its fix. Also if I remember correctly, there was a 1000w halogen floodlight placed 50 yards infront of the cameras to help them read the numberplates at night. This camera setup doesn't work correctly and that is the reason the cones are still there - nothing to do with roadworks, or road improvements IMO, just trying to fine-tune the fruit machine to maximise the payout. How long has it been there now, 3 years?

One of the most dangerous ANPR sites I have seen, and by profession I have looked at a lot of them.

I do the journey from the m3 --> m25 every morning and its amazing how its always deserted going out of London.

Never bother using it on the way back in though.

It has to be the emptiest stretch of motorway in the UK, consistently!

I use it a fair bit at night when coming back from a gig or my mate in Dorking and nothing pisses me off more then having to do 50 on an empty motorway. The minute I get to the NSL it's into 3rd and I floor it. I also wonder if anyone has been fined as I've been in cars and vans with people and they go 70 and get nothing but I'm not risking it.I just hope it fks off soon which seems it won't shootshootshoot

Maybe I should just come off at Chertsey as it's getting old to go via the M3 or take the long way round and go A3 to Guildford, blast down the hogs back and A331 back to Wokingham driving

I came through there last night and before that A316 from Twickenham where there are more roadworks and supposedly average speed cameras for a temporary 30 yikes limit. I didn't even see the start gantry and when I realised it was an average speed zone the first signs I saw were 30mph on my right and the original 50mph on my left so i guess that doesn't conform to the requisite signage!

Anyway I still have never met anyone who's got points from a SPECS set up. I'm in disbelief mode - of course that might change after last night!

Yep, gotta hate that one too. I do believe work is being done there though ? I can't remember since I haven't been down there for a month.

Based on the link above I'm just hoping the permanent 50mph restriction will not be monitored by cameras. When its not busy its no different from any other motorway junction, when it is you cant go much over 50 anyway!

PS Just got on at J3 of the M3 this morning and there are now Specs 'lamposts' appearing there - assuming more long term roadworks. Looked like it ws mainly south of J3.

people do the same on the M42 think it starts at J3 and finishes at J7. Specs will indicate a speed limit of 40 for example and vans/sale reps still boot it past at 70ish.
