Zero Kit Car anybody?
Discussion
Robin Hood/GBS cars have their good and bad points. The owners club is excellent.
It would not occur to me to buy one. The starting cost is lower than many other cars but the extra labour needed can add a lot of time to the build. The resale value is lower than most.
I know you haven't asked for alternative suggestions, so here's mine-

Blackcab; are you asking about the Blackjack Zero?
It's a car I really like, and had a good crawl over one at Exeter at the last show. It looks like a really professional job, and if I could I'd build one tomorrow. I still like my Libra though!
I think the reason for so little build info on the net, is that there just aren't a lot built yet. RO doesn't seem to be in any rush to get them out, aren't there only going to be 50 made or something?

Hi Paul.
I would echo the post above. The Zero is the only RH I could ever contemplate. The kits do look well priced. They will always be held back by peoples perceptions of RH however. Many of which are true.IMHO.
Look at the MEV Sonic as suggested. Come to Stoneleigh and peruse the field. You can learn a lot by talking to the manufacturers, and I don't mean specifications etc. Some of them talk sense, some talk b*ll*cks. Some have a grasp of chassis dynamics etc. and some...well......
Do you wish you still had your old car?
Geoff.

Oh dear; wires crossed.
I was asking the o/p if this was what he was interested in:

The 'RO' reference was to Richard Oakes, it wasn't a mis-spelling of robin hood.
I would rather have the car pictured above than JASC.
JASC= Just Another Seven Copy

Without question - my biggest car sale regret was selling the Spyder! I have been looking at a few different kits and the RH zero one on the face of it looks good value initially - I am sure it has its chassis limitations but I know I can make a decent car for not much money .. so it is the fave so far - I will be heading to stoneleigh complete with chequebook so will see what happens I would echo the post above. for no apparent rational reason I was draw to the Zero kit, I even sat in it and spoke to the staff. I was thinking of building one with my daughter. To me, not being an engineer the chassis looks little different to any other Locost-type with outboard springs. I was having thoughts of minimalist stripped out, aeroscreen, full cage, Protec shocks, LSD, bike bodies on the Zetec.... Am I nuts??

I must admit, my first thoughts were that he was asking about the CC Zero!I was asking the o/p if this was what he was interested in:

Far too many different 'Zero kit cars' around, if you ask me!
I liked the visual look of the body, to me it is as close to a Caterham visually that you could get away with without being sued. I rekon using bits of car I have layng around like wheels and brakes, seats ecg I could put a 250+ brake per ton car on the road for about £5k. Can someone here with engineering knowledge tell me the chassis is awful please???

The reason is YES YOU ARE NUTS!!!!!!!Get the MEV!
Better still save your money for Stelvio!
Hi again Paul. You'll be able to compare the Zero to the MK indy, MNR etc. at Stoneleigh. Leave your chequebook in your pocket until you've seen all of the competition.
As regards engine, consider the BMW 318is, together with its tiny gearbox. 140hp and cheap as chips.
"Powered by BMW" has a certain ring to it, don't you think?
Why not send for brochures from the various protagonists in advance?
I've looked over the Zero chassis and can't see anything fundamentally wrong with it. Apart from the badge, some would say. A few areas where I would have used round tube instead of square, mainly for aesthetic reasons, but nothing fundamental. Make sure weather gear is available, should you need it. I'd fit Caterham rear wings too.

Been doing loads of research in to various and to be honest the Zero is coming out as a good option - the chassis can take some abuse and also some power, I have looked at MK Indy before and they do seem as good in areas - I am still open minded so hopefully after the show I will no much better .... alternatively I can Geoff to sell me my Spyder back !!

How is your sheet metalwork? Are you both good and quick at it? If not, get the Indy. With its fibreglass bodywork you will be on the road while the Zero buyers are still struggling with the metalwork. About the same price too, I reckonDecision now made after a trip to Newark this weekend...
Going for the Zero, with a new 2.0 zetec, throttle bodies, and a few nice bits - picked up load of tips rearding dashboard layout, colour schemes etc and most importantly wheels!
Saw my old Spyder down there again ! (Spyderdrivers) still looks well for a car thats well in to its 20's.
Garage has been cleared awaiting the new arrival ....... Bloody well excited !
