As per the title - Can a limited company simply trade as XYZ or does it have to always state XYZ limited??

Many Thanks,

It can trade as whatever it likes but it must disclose its formal name, registered office etc on letterhead, website etc.

Yes, Once a company is classified as dissolved the name is up for grabs. ANYONE (including yourself) can register a new company with that particular name

The caveat I would add to that though is starting up with a similar or identical name as a closed company can cause problems by association and also availability of web addresses etc.

Thank you for your response.

The above was a concern and as it happens the domain is taken for another 12 months!

Shame as I liked the name, but I suppose its not worth having to explain that it wasnt me that went into liquidation... Back to the drawing board....

Don't often see it these days and there may be a reason but companies bought out of Bankruptcy sometimes used the same name but with the year of (re)founding added. So Lehman Brothers might become Lehman Brothers(2009) Ltd.

OK, it's a poor example but it's getting late
