Drove over the (New) Severn Bridge yesterday and paid my toll, in cash. Rip off!! Was the first time for 10 years I've been over there and made me think of something.

There are signs before the bridge saying cash only and NO CARDS and they are a few junctions in advance so in theory you turn off and try and find a cashpoint but what happens if you mistakenly think you do have enough cash but when you turn up at the toll you find you don't?!

It's not like you can turn around and go back again?!!

or when you get to the m6 tolls for the first time ever with your cash ready and discover its a card machine and your card is in your jacket on the back seat under a suitcase...

They probably write you a fine which you have to pay within a certain period. Only a guess though.

They close all the barriers and escort you back - I think there's a road off to the left back towards England, must cross over to the other carriageway I guess.

They put you on the other carrigeway and send you back into England to find a cash point, the nearest of which is about 15 miles away, I only know because I did this a few years ago hehe

Maybe they do what the dartford one does, give you an IOU. They stopped all 7 lanes as I didn't know it was a quid, and then gave me this ticket on the hard shoulder (then left me to get across two lanes of traffic). Didn't pay it.

There is a service station back down at the turn off to the old bridge. I can't remember though if you can go to it and then get back on to go back to the new bridge.

I went through the other night for the first time. About 2 miles before there is sign saying "cash only" - the service station a mile before teh bridge has a cash point but the damn thing charges you...

Funny how most tolls in europe, M6 toll and many other have cottoned on to cards and automation, but teh Severn bridge, an engineering masterpiece can't manage it. Grr...

(I wouldn't mind if they had a backup so that if you arrived without cash you could pay with a card and pay a 50p supplement!)

Why are they still charging tolls? I know it must cost quite a bit to maintain but surely it's been paid for by now?!

Good idea about the toll +50p for paying by card. Agreed, I don't think that's unreasonable

yes They make you look like a complete bellend as well. Luckily it hasn't happened to me, but a few friends have made that mistake over the years.

If they raise the toll much more it may actually prove cheaper to drive the long way around.

Because people still pay it?

I also found out that the M6 Toll doesn't take solo cards. The bank haven't changed mine over to a Maestro yet, so had to use the Mastercard.

As Vixpy posted, they let you through, but then escort you back round, via service roads, back the way you came. I know, because it happened to me.

I had to drive 10-15 mins to a small nasty looking town, and search for a cash point, at 10pm. Could have been unpleasant for a single woman.

Why the f*ck don't the luddites have a pay-by-card facility?

3 trips across for the price of one? Or two if you only pay the one way. Bargain.

You should've driven straight back to the same booth - without any money - and claimed that their racetrack was crap hehe

This reminds me, I was so annoyed by a woman in the toll booth a few weeks back. I was in the car and chatting on the phone. It was quiet, going slowly into the booths and I like to think I'm able to talk on the phone and drive.

She took my money, gave me my change, and then the cheeky bh goes "and how about a fine and points on your licence?"

I was so annoyed, I don't need some bloody 40 year old woman who's managed to achieve nothing and is still doing a stty job at her age to tell me what to do.

The same thing happened a few weeks ago, I was in tesco, and the woman says "Do you have your own bags?" I say "Nope" and the chopsy, self righteous biatch... Shakes her head at me. I was so wound up. I told her that I'd make up my own mind about how I recycle, not be told what to do from women being paid minimum wage to push food through a laser.

I think people on tills need to learn their place, that they're there to serve me, be polite and not lecture me.

I think that payment by card is coming soon. Which will be good because I go across quite a few times a year, but not enough to warrant having a TAG.
