Chaps,

Mrs zcacogp and I are users of toptable.co.uk. I am assuming there are some other users on here, and we were wondering how it works.

As in, when you book a restaurant on TT, and review the meal afterwards, you gain points. A given number of points can be used to buy a meal at a participating restaurant. (A free meal at Mango Tree prompted the discussion).

Who will have 'paid' for this meal? TopTable themselves, I am guessing. If so, where do they get their money from? If you ever call them (which I had to on a couple of occasions), it is clear that they have a modest number of staff working for them, so it will cost a little bit to run.

So, how do they make money? Do restaurants pay to be part of it? If so, what is the appeal for the restaurant? Advertising?

Its a referal website - just like compare the market or confused.

They get a kick back for every booking made through their website. All automated - no need for a massive headcount.

The more reviews they get on the site, the more content they have, meaning they appear higher up in the google rankings, meaning they get more bookings meaning they make more money - simples.

Interesting, thanks.

I thought it was a small organisation, probably employing single-digit numbers of people, until I had cause to telephone them. Then I got the distinct impression that they are well into double-digit numbers of people (called twice, had a different person on two occasions, each time it sounded as if they were in a call centre with other people talking on the telephone in the background.) So I was curious about how small they are, and how they are funded.

I guess it is TT who fund the free meals then - via some kind of invoice monthly (or similar) from the participating restaurants.

£2 per booking? You'd need to make a fair few bookings a day to make ends meet.
