Looking for a uber cool home phone

Basically looking for an uber cool cordless, Ive seen the B&O units love them but what else is there in designer functional phone land

Must be a good functional phone aswell,
Doesnt need an answerphone function
ideally can have 2 handsets.
reasonable battery life a plus

Sounds like a personal add that, any way what can you recomend budget depends on how much I like it, needs to be lifestyle cool

Actualy, their is a better one that is coming out soon with full colour screen, but cant remember the make for the life of me. German make i think.

Yup, I've got the plain aluminium one.

Stupidly overpriced mind you, and basic functionality like being able to synchronise contact lists from your Mac is missing (you'd have thought B&O would make their kit reasonably easy to integrate with Apple gear but it's fking hard, I've wasted a LOT of time trying).

Perhaps I'm getting older and more cynical about overpriced kit, but I'd be tempted to pay for an ultra-quality iPhone and a Wifi to VoIP gateway for the home - I'm always carrying my iPhone, it has all my contacts on it, and the B&O phone, whilst high quality and made of nice materials (essential criteria for me), isn't £1000's worth (I did have to buy a B&O wireless base station and an additional triangular-based plastic B&O phone for upstairs with that).

What I'd like is someone to make a replacement back cover for the iPhone 3GS out of thickly anodised aluminium, much like the B&O phone and the original mk1 iPhone - with some micro-perforations or some other engineering solution to ameliorate the faraday-cage issue with the mk1 iPhone's metal case. I still have my mk1 iPhone, and the metal case gives the unit the same feel of quality as the B&O banana phone. The new iPhones, with shiny plastic cases, feel very cheap in comparison.

And no, I don't want a precious metal case (there are companies making replacement iPhone cases in gold and platinum) - but a 'special' metal would rock. Perhaps a titanium back cover with funky anodising to give an interesting colour, or a metal matrix composite, or a beryllium alloy that is light as a feather but has a gold / bronze sheen.

Something like that would be ace - I'd LOVE it.

Is molybdenum cooler than beryllium alloy? Beryllium is ultra-light, has a distinctive colour and makes me think of exotic Formula 1 parts before they were banned due to beryllium dust being hazardous (solid metal being OK, though)... Molybdenum makes me think of 'cro-moly' and bicycle frames. And no disrespect if you're a keen bicyclist, but I like things with wheels to have engines, and my legs are made for running, not powering wheels

I've got a thing for element collection... my current holy grail is to replace my ring (it's not technically a wedding ring as we're not married for certain reasons but a 14 year relationship deserves a ring of commitment IMO) with one made from pure iridium (or as close to pure as practical, due to alloy brittleness). Iridium is of course the densest known element in the periodic table (osmium is very close but osmium isn't as biocompatible, since osmium tetroxide is pretty toxic and is *very* bad for your eyes) - and iridium is nice and benign to the skin.

All you guys with heavy 950 platinum rings - the other 5% is usually iridium. Cost doesn't bother me - iridium is cheaper than platinum since everyone wants platinum jewellery more than iridium for some reason (thus iridium and palladium are the 'byproducts' of platinum mining and extraction), whereas I think iridium looks exquisite - it's got a blueish tinge:

I currently have a ring made of tungsten, which whilst only has the density of gold, has the highest melting point of any metal (only carbon beats it in the periodic table) - another extreme Feels great as well and it'll only get scratched by a diamond or some boron nitride.

Anyway getting a bit off-topic here Both tungsten and iridium casebacks for iPhones would be silly since the phones would end up weighing more than my Macbook Air. So ultimate low-density metal would be the coolest IMO, if you like materials science like me Pure beryllium may be out of the question because engineering shops aren't allowed to work with it due to dust toxicity. Group 1 metals are a silly idea for obvious reasons. I guess an exotic magnesium alloy would be cool, but I'd want bare anodised metal and there'd always be the risk of Mg fire due to group 2 reactivity. Titanium would do the job, but Apple did that more than 8 years ago and I've got a Titanium powerbook in my collection. Perhaps titanium anodised a very pale blue?

Any materials scientists / engineers here who would know how hard this would be to do? I don't want a clip-on case, there are loads of those about and they look ste. I'm more looking to make my new 3GS (when it finally arrives) feel as high quality as my original mk1 iPhone.

It all sounds pretty silly, I suppose, but I'd be happy selling the B&O home phone for this.


Alternatively, being financially sensible for a while, why not just re-purpose my mk1 iPhone, metal case and all, as the home phone using Skype on Wifi? Wifi works fine, the phone is in great condition, it is the best quality iPhone, and it syncs all my contacts....


Still, I'd like a 'special' 3GS - bloody everyone travelling to work in London has one of the damn things and the only 'personalisation' available appears to be the gold / platinum / diamonds bullst for the gangsta bling community, which is NOT my style. Engineering 'bling' for me please

Was about to order these (a triple set from Argos in white @ about £45.00 !!) when I read the following review on Amazon....
These phones look good, but that's all you can say for them. Reception is terrible, with constant interference, which is not something I've ever found before with a DECT phone, even a cheap one. It refused to store my answerphone message, and repeatedly lost all stored and redial numbers. Finally, after about 10 days use, one of the handsets went completely dead. Needless to say, at this point they were returned. Do not be taken in by stylish appearances: these are very bad phones and you should avoid.
