I work in a pub/restaurant, and tonight someone has done a bloody runner on us without paying their bill.

Ok, the bill was only about £40, but the principle of it winds me up so much. I'd left the bar for no longer than a minute, and by the time I returned they'd pissed off and were on their way out of the car park.

We know that the food was OK because all the plates came back clean, and I don't think they were short of money as they drove off in an Impreza!

So, if the tall guy and the woman whose fake tan was inspired by Easyjet's uniform are reading this, we'd like our 40 quid please. smile

We once did it by accident...most pubs you pay when you order but this place didnt work that way and we got up and left when we were done. We also went back 10 minutes later to pay!

Report it to the police, if there is CCTV they may be able to see the car

Once did this by accident, forgot to pay on a Friday, (too many cocktails)

Realise on the Sunday, went back the following Monday to settle up, and not only were they slightly taken aback I was there, they gave me a discount card for being 'the only honest man in London'

Happens all the time here. It's really no big deal, no one ever calls the police over it.

I'm sure it's built into the margins on pub "food" anyway. £40? What were they easting, caviar?

It's only £20 a head.

£12 drinks (2 drinks each at £3 a go)
£10 starter (£5/head)
£18 mains (£9/head)

Bing! £40 on a not-necessarily-flash meal and a few beers.

So theft makes you a real man ?

I once got home from Tescos having spent £55 on food and my wife decided to go through the bill to see if I could have got it cheaper. WE realised that the checkout girl had failed to put through £3 worth of pork chops (she'd put one through). I went back to pay and was treated as if I were mad to bother.

I'm sorry, but I have morals.

As for leaving a restaurant without paying, that's just pure theft. If the food were rubbish, I'd leave my name and address and refuse to pay, but that would be fair.

rofl

£40 to many pubs, especially in this economic climate, is a big fking deal. There's no way you can "build" that scale of theft in to the margins.

We swipe people's cards if they're eating outside as we, logistally, can't keep an eye on them. However, we're "fortunate" that our pub is small enough that it'd be very difficult to walk out without paying having eaten inside.

I a lot of pubs in Germany, they mark down your drimks on a beermat, and at the end ofthe night, you hand it over and they tot up your bill. When I was living in Aachen a few years back, one of my mates got home and realised he hadn't paid. The guy said thanks for coming back and settling up, but as we were the only non-germans in the bar, he kinda remembered us!!

I've walked out of my local once or twice without paying for a drink as I've got chatting and forgot. Always gone back and paid though.

Actually, all bars in Germany & Austria (they all serve food, usually very good) give you the bill at the end of the evening whether you have eaten food or not. They also by default give seperate bills which is a nice touch when there's 6-8 of you. A shame UK establishments can't do any of this, it's always money up front, very unwelcoming and if you for seperate bills in the UK you're looked at like you come from mars.

I forgot to pay in a restaurant in Devon once, juts got talking to the person I was out with, and we left without thinking about it.

Went back an hour later, explained I was actually a total plum. They accepted my defense and payment - all sorted smile

Luckily in my business, we rarely get the incidents where people dont pay, but we did do a job for a mate of a mate once, did the job while he was out and he then did a runner down south without paying. (was moving out hence house empty)

Live and learn eh.

No, the punter just tells the Police they didn't enjoy the meal and refused to pay for the service.
