Does the barcode have any meaning?
Other than being evocative of the Marlboro branding, I don't think so.I really dont think many people would find the white lines on the side of the car 'evocative' or having a relevance to the brand.

So Ferrari are still being paid by Marlboro to put a bar code on the side of their car?

Yes, Philip Morris, the manufacturers of Marlboro cigarettes, sponsor Ferrari. The team's full name is Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro.I really dont think many people would find the white lines on the side of the car 'evocative' or having a relevance to the brand.
I think the arrangement is Philip Morris (Marlboro) have bought pretty much the entire car for advertising, they then resell the space to other companies. Don't know where I read it, but I think that's the situation. As to the barcode, well I remember when the anti fag rules began to come in, I think they tried all sorts of thing, filing in the letters, then a barcode that matched the shape of Marlboro, that suggested, if you squinted and looked through your fingers you could be forgiven for thinking it could still say Marlboro, not sure but I don't think they can use the red and white chevron thing now, such as it's a logo, and associated with the brand. Could be wrong.
It's going to be alcohol advertising next, the charity/medical pressure "industry" is starting to blame binge and underage drinking on advertising, and call for a ban on sports advertising, we are apparently being brain washed, of course the alcohol companies don't help themselves by trotting the same argument that tobacco companies use to give, that they are not about attracting new drinkers/smokers but getting existing consumers to change brand. When really what they should say is we are looking to attract new customers (and brand changers) but we believe in freedom of choice, and don't believe in pandering to the nanny (tax revenue raising) state types, that wish to ban everything that is fun, eventually they'll be banning motorsport, due to it's waste of natural resources, risk to health and the madness of going around in circles.

People still make the visual connection between the barcode and the Marlboro name. Or at least that's the myth they spread so that you can make a brain connection before you make the visual connection again when you see the car
A couple of years ago I saw a Ferrari branded Marlboro cig packet - its purpose was clearly attempting to make the connection of Ferrari F1 back to the Marlboro cigs. Not illegal to put a car on a cig packet to my knowledge. But they seem to have dropped it for whatever reason. Or at least I haven't seen it around in the UK.

marlboro are a clothing brand arent they?
Yes, in the same way as Benson and Hedges considered becoming a coffee brand. I don't know the detail, but it seems the advertising ban also excludes them promoting other products sharing the brand name.
I have often wondered if the barcode used is the one from a pack of Marlboro. Maybe I should buy a pack just to check. is that how advertising works?
