Hi All,

My brothers mark 2 is causing a really strange problem (1991 digifant (sp) 8v GTI):

If you are driving to a junction and depress the clutch when the car is idling over 1000 rpm.... the car stalls.

This does not happen if you leave it in gear and wait until you are at or below 1000rpm.

The car starts fine, runs fine and idles perfectly (850-900rpm).

It is causing a real issue....anyone shed any light on this?

I could try and turn the idle up a little to bodge it but I will not be happy with that fix.

Thanks in advance

Has it ever been to a non franchised dealer?

I find they don't understand the technology of the VAG brand, probably some monkey there screwed something up

I had this problem on my Mk III 8v so it may be this. There is a thin vacuum tube running down from the right hand side of the inlet plenum to the injector pipe (sort of directly above the gear linkage) which has a fabric covering (like you used to get on bike pumps). The rubber perishes under the fabric and leaks. Nip into a motor factor and ask for some ordinary rubber vacuum tube (about 80p) and simply replace it. It cured mine instantly.

If it's not that, someone suggested spraying carb cleaner into the inlet with the car running. I did this also but am unsure if that made any difference but it can't hurt...

From experince either the idle stabilisation valve is knackered or....

.....there is a short vacum pipe that goes from the rocker cover to the inlet (I think) if this splits (and it often does) it plays all sort of havoc with the idle.
It's about 2" long with a 30 degree bend and about 1" diameter, it splits where it goes into the rocker cover from the heat and oil.

Check that the Idle Stabiliation Valve (ISV) is making a buzzing noise when the ignition is on.

Sounds suspiciously like the idle stabilisation valve is dying. Either that or an air leak on the inlet somewhere.

what nutter takes a 18 yr old car to a garage, let alone a franchised dealer?! these cars are only sensible if you do everything at home.

back to topic, ask on clubgti forum someone is bound to kno for sure

Sounds like dirty ISV - bit of petrol to clean it normally does the trick smile

its an air leak. happenend to mine. on top of the rocker there is a round flying saucer breather. under this is a rubber bung. check this, and all rubber parts on the intake system
