Gearbox info required - Lotus/Renault combination
Discussion
A long shot but I'm asking for a neighbour & this seems to be the most appropriate section (I think).
Does anyone amongst the PH masses know where I could get some more information about and a possible source for a gearbox casing for a Renault Fuego Turbo circa 1983?
It's for some mad mid-engined Lotus kit car his brother in law has, the gearbox has some strange uprated internals but the casing itself is cracked & beyond repair. Apparently this is the only box that will fit his car & engine combination.
Can anyone help shed some light on the subject??
Thanks in advance
Lee

Which engine & gearbox does he have exactly?
You could try Spyder Engineering or Banks Europa. I purchased my gearbox & bellhousing from them (2.0L Zetec + NG3 Fuego transaxle). It's a standard setup for their Europa replacement chassis.
BTW - I'd be very interested in more info on the uprated internals if he knows - eg. standard or custom parts?

If it is from a Renault Fuego Turbo circa 1983 then its the NG3-065 box.
You will find lots of people looking for these I'm afraid. They are a small lightweight box and if the internals have been uprated to suit much increased power then I'm not surprised that the casing couldn't take it.
If a long term solution is in order then a more robust box would be a better plan.

Do you know off-hand how close (or not...) the UN1 would be as a drop-in replacement? You will find lots of people looking for these I'm afraid. The NG9 is a step down from the UN1. NG-series were fitted to all sorts....all 2L Non Turbo Renault 21's had them for example (The Turbo had the UN1 and the 1.7 had a transverse JB-series.)
Does it have to be the NG9-065?
EDIT- sorry, misread. You need an NG3. Might be worth looking into NG9 though they are VERY similar....I can use a 1995 Renault 19 TD JC5 box on my 1984 Renault 9 Turbo for example which has a JB3 from the factory.
Edit again- That NG3 even has the same pull-type clutch as the NG9. Have a look at some 21's matey, you might find that it's compatible.

Thanks guys, some interesting info there. I'll see how much more info I can get about the car & the engine, as it's 2nd & 3rd hand info that I've got if you catch my drift.
I must say I wasn't expecting any mention of JB or JC series boxes, I know a bit about these What similarities are there between JB/C & NG boxes?

Absolutely none mate , I was using it as an example....I can fit a mid-90's Turbo Diesel JC5 to my early eighties R9 1.4 Petrol Turbo that has an old JB3 from the factory. (They are transverse engined with the box on the passenger side of the engine)I'm hoping under the same logic the NG9 in the normally aspirated, longtitudinally engined 21's, 25's and the like will be a compatible replacement for the Longtitudinal NG3 in your Fuego.
