Bit of a random question, but is it just me who finds that vinegar seems to develop a weird taste when I have the flu? (and indeed anything containing vinegar; s&v crisps, ketchup just to name some)

Most of your taste sense is actually smell, so when your nose is blocked, everything "tastes" funny, as you can't smell it.

If you hold your nose and eat a piece of onion and a piece of apple, they taste the same.

Apparently, if you pinch your nose, you can eat twiglets without being sick, but i've never been brave enough to try it

Nope, tried onion and it is the same.

Apparently onion, potato and apple taste the same when you can't smell.

Just the texture than? Does that mean poo and chocolate mouse would taste the same?

Can't comment on poo and chocolate mouse but the onion thing, how could anyone not tell a piece of onion from an apple/potato, its texture is pretty unique and nothing like an apple?

YES! Ive had this a few times, when I've got man flue! Everyone thought I was mad and never heard of it, but anything with vinegar tastes and smells horrible.

Phew I'm not alone! It's so annoying though, can't have fish and chips the way they should be had, I can't eat salt and vinegar crisps, and I detest the ketchup we have at the minute as it's tasting funny, I didn't realise just how much vinegar was in it.

Seriously, do things taste the same? That's got to be one to try out in a minute. Oh, and why would you be sick from eating Twiglets? They're great

Kind of a shame its been moved, my original question was somehow turning into an argument about eating poo, and now the thread will die. Still, gotta love the PH magic.

To bring up this old topic - currently going through fully fledged man-flu and anything with vinegar in it has the weirdest smell and taste, makes the food completely un-edible. It's such a bizarre reaction! i can't even compare the taste to anything else.
