I'll warn you now, this is a very boring post that probably only interests me but I thought I'd share anyway.

I've been to the main Anthony's restaurant in Leeds a couple of times now and been really happy with things, one thing I haven't seen though has been "Anthony".

We popped into the Corn Exchange in Leeds yesterday (where the Anthony's empire continues to grow) to pick up some cakes from the bakery downstairs and have a wander around the other sections and much to my shock he (the younger Anthony) was down there brushing the tops of muffins in the shop.

He served us in a tiny shop on a Saturday afternoon like a minimum wage student (an efficient and polite one) - bit of a surprise for me really, despite him not coming across very well on the Great British menu I regard him highly as a chef and didn't expect to cross paths with him like that.

For the record the cafe in the Corn Exchange is excellent value for a light snack and the sticky toffee muffins from the bakery are addictive things, worth a trip in if you are in the area.

I told you this was a boring post but the food and drink section doesn't really lend itself to "spotted" stuff I guess smile

You'd think he'd bake fresh ones rather than just dusting the old ones wouldn't you?

Nonsense. Your thread is of interest to me and I expect many other 'foodies' too! I have yet to eat at Anthony's but plan to around Christmas.

He came across as an arrogant sod on GBM but having served time at El Bulli and having Ferran Adria as a mentor I can imagine what some of his creations must be like.

I will visit the Corn Exchange and try those muffins on your recommendation!

Like you say the Great British Menu outing didn't really do him any favours beyond alerting people to him if they didn't already know his work, unfortunately it probably scared a few people off too.

I'm glad I gave it a go though, genuinely impressed and amazed at how reasonable the prices are on the set menu for the quality of food and service delivered. I took my dad for lunch on his birthday and he was blown away with the whole experience. I can't understand why it isn't packed out for every lunch sitting but as long as I can get a table I'm happy.

The Corn Exchange stuff just makes it all more accessible to the masses, the cafe part is cheap but the food retains a quality feel, the sausage roll they do is lovely and those pesky muffins and cakes aren't helping with my diet smile

I sound like the PR guy now but I'm just a happy punter who likes a bit of grub.

Try the bakewell muffin. Very good (and I'm not even that bothered about bakewell tart!).

The cafe's nice, but you have to choose wisely as some items are on the small side.

Nice use of a nice old building. Hope it survives.

I was tempted by the bakewell yesterday but couldn't tear myself away from the sticky toffee and wanted to limit it to one before I turn into a muffin smile

As you say it's nice to see the Corn Exchange back in use, hopefully it will fill up with more shops and things as time goes on.

Thanks for the tip on the cafe.

o/t but whats happening with the corn exchange these days? i thought all the shops were forced out? spent many an afternoon buying 2nd hand clothes to try and look like a mod in my teenage years. might have to pop by and have a look, if only to give the emo;s hanging around the steps some abuse smile

It looks as though they are trying to get shops back in there now - my understanding was that it was going to be devoted to food but there are a few retailers moving back in, not many though.

There were no emos on Saturday frown
