Pic Of The Week: E30 BMW M3
Classic car, classic cornering shot...
As you may have read about earlier this week, our very own RacingPete is enjoying trundling about in his brand-new BMW M3. But it has got us thinking - a 400bhp V8 and a £60k asking price is a long way from the spirit of the high-revving four-pot original, isn't it?
That's a debate that could run and run - you could argue that the M3's no-compromise sporting DNA has remained intact, but we'd also listen to you if you said that the big V8 and hi-tech ancillaries has forever changed the M-car experience.
Whatever your point of view, it's hard to deny that both cars are pretty darn cool. So just as we can salute the M3's achievements of the present, we thought it was high time to contemplate the M3's glorious past, too.

Odd comment though - relatively speaking the E30 M3 was ferociously expensive in 1986. Starting somewhere in the region of £30,000 before options (and being 1986, 'options' meaning things like A stereo and speakers, electric windows, that sort of thing).
Someone else can work out what £30,000 would mean now, but I'd guess it's a damn sight more than £60,000?
Edit: Or is that the point? That the E90 M3 is actually a bargain compared with it's great grandfather?

I don't think a standard M3 was anywhere near £30k, some of the special editions were and I would imagine you could spec one up to that level but I thought they were more like £22k, which was still pretty high in 1986...Someone else can work out what £30,000 would mean now, but I'd guess it's a damn sight more than £60,000?

The 1986/87 200ps standard M3 (as featured in the pic) was about £22k, the Evo 1988/89 220ps cars were circa £26k and the 1990 Sport Evo was £38k.PPPPPP said:

Anyone own or have any experience of the E30 325i? Is it any good?
