i.e. More than one car, but not counting one car insured in the missus' name!

What if you have loads of cars? Are any of you using a trader type policy?

Does similar exist for private owners?

How do you "Home Traders" get on?

I'm trying to insure my 2007 Golf GTi as my daily driver, 10k miles PA, along with my 1995 BMW 525 Touring as a second very low mileage car, but struggling to find a decent deal.

The only multi-car policy I can find is the Admiral one and it doesn't seem that cheap.

Cheers. smile

Volvo is insured in the OH's name with me as a named driver as she is the primary driver of that one.
Caterham and Mustang are both on classic/specialist policies with limited mileage.

I looked into doing it as a multi-car policy with one insurer but it didn't seem cheaper or better cover.

Think I remember reading somewhere that you need to be a registered business and a full time trader, the cars are only covered when being used in connection with the motor trader business although you can get some policy that allow some limited personal use?

I read something like that ages ago so take it with a piece of salt, pretty sure we have some motor traders on here somewhere who'll know the in's and out's of traders policy's.

When I was running four cars I insured them all separately and all in my name. I still do the same now with three vehicles, but my insurer realises that they get good business from me and look after me accordingly.

I just looked into this again :

355
Caterham
535d
Defender soft top

All in my name the gf has an mx5.

Admiral were far more expensive than doing them individually I tried various multicar policies but they were all more expensive than shopping around and doing them individually.

I used to have a policy that covered 3 cars house contents building etc etc about 10 years ago but they stopped it, there is also a policy by Chubb that does multicar but that worked out more expensive too

Admiral do a multi car policy. Works out pretty well as clearly you can only be driving one of them at a time.

I never found a good multi-car policy. Nobody specialises in rally replicas, real rally cars, 4x4s and overly tuned sports cars these days...

One of the companies I approached asked me what "normal car" I was intending to insure. This confused me because I thought my Range Rover was normal.

I have individual policies with their own NCB. It's not efficient with my time, but the whole fleet comes in for less than £1k a year this way whereas it would be more than £2k with a dedicated multicar package. And I would only have one single NCB to lose instead of 3.

I have a family fleet insurance policy for 4 cars through http://www.norton-ib.co.uk/.

Before that I got Elephant to insure a second car and mirror the NCD onto the second car. This may be the best approach for you as family fleet has a minimum price.

We use Chubb. I think we've got about 10 cars on it.

They're very helpful and flexible when I've spoken to them, premiums are on average reasonable for each car (effectively any driver) considering my age and what some of them are, and they've yet to try and shaft us at renewal time.

I could be wrong, but I believe we have a package on our home insurance with them as well.

I'm with Tradex, up to 6 cars (and it's private, NOT a trade policy). Not quite cheap but flexibile.

Two individual policies with each their own no claims, Multi car policies are useless, as others have stated. I'm with different companies for both cars as well, as it works out cheaper that way.

I use Michael Ward Associates to broker my fleet policy. Can't remember which underwriter it's with at the moment, they move it around to suit http://www.michaelwardassociates.com/

If you have 2 or more high performance cars, it's *much* cheaper to use a fleet policy. I just keep adding to it.

Its not just that... its remebering when the tax and MOT is due, when the services are due and what sort of service etc..... gets a tad confusing if you dont pay attention smile

I have three classics and two moderns on a multi-vehicle classic policy with Footman James and I'm very happy with them. I did cost it out a couple of years ago and it worked out to be a essentially the same premium overall to doing things separately, and the convenience of having only one renewal date is well worth any small extra.

The modern cars are priced at regular rates and just added on to the classics' premium, but as long as there are never more moderns than classics on the policy they are happy to do that. Although I do not earn (nor can I apply) NCB, if I ever leave they say they will be able to supply a letter stating that any given driver has had however many years without loss.
