Hi folks,

we have just picked up a 11.000 miles V8 Vantage and while driving the car back to Germany I noticed
that in certain road conditions when rolling over a hard hump the steering wheels gives you a metallic feedback like if there is some bearing shake ?
Anybody noticed that too, or is this particular for our car ?

I noticed something similar. The dealer repacked the air bag mechanism and all was well.

Same here... my 07 rattled very badly when I first had it... Its a known problem. I believe the fix involves some additional zip ties smile

very common issue, and it does require removal of the airbag to rectify, not a difficult job but in the interests of safety not something to be done with out experience, as it is an explosive component and incorrectly handled at a minimum will cause serious injury, The airbag system is required to be disabled before removal and triggers such as static electricity or using a multimeter to test can be enough to set them off, one job i would recommend leaving to the professionals,

Dear Rick,

I have been building an Ultima so I would say I probably can handle it, is it enough to remove the fuse ?
Not sure if I see the Aston Martin dealer here if they even know what I am talking about........any more hints what to do and how to proceed.

I think it unfair to ask Rick any more questions regarding this problem because if you do manage to kill yourself then Rick would be in deep stty doo doo...........suggest you take it to the professionals ie your local Aston dealer

The system design is the same as many other manufactures so the same precautions and equipment are used, we have to registered to work and store airbags, just a simple action such as placing the airbag face down can set them off, A local workshop that can diagnose and repair electronic systems on modern cars should be able to do this for you at a reasonable cost and safely.

ok got the message so what is causing this metallic rattle, is it the airbag assembly itself that is not sitting properly ? I am not so sure about the german Aston Martin dealer.....

I have been driving the car yesterday again, and it seems that the problem with the steering column is related with the angle adjustment. When I make the wheel lower
as necessary for somebody smaller than me it seems that the problem is fixed. I had the wheel in the highest possible position and you can actually generate the play by hardly press the wheel from one side to the other. Maybe there is an adjustment of the lever that is fixing the angle adjustment.

I wonder if this is the sort of thing I've mentioned on other threads. Anyone else got more recent info to share?
I'll try the steering position variations next time I'm out

To check if it is actually the airbag unit just sit in the car and gently bring your fist down on the rim of the steering wheel a few times, you'll hear it rattle, my airbag unit could actually be wobbled around slightly by hand too, the sleeves fixed the problem.

The fix is as shown above and very easy to do, the unit itself doesn't have to be removed, just take out each screw, slip the plastic sleeve over the screw and re-insert, tighten up and the job is done.

Done this now. The difference isn't night and day but there is less chatter.
Another thumbs up for the internet .

After collecting my car I very quickly noticed the rattle and could easily move the wheel centre with my hands.

Bought the sleeves for the bolts and installing them took no more than 10mins. No more noise!
