My wife did an online Tesco shop for the first time today which arrived a few minutes ago. Is it the done thing to tip the delivery man? This time just to be safe and not set precedent...we didn't!

Did we do wrong?

No, but if you ever buy a kitchen from Wickes, a generous tip to the delivery crew is de rigueur.

Only tip if the driver is not wearing an earring.

Not really, I did some deliveries whilst working at Tesco and never expected a tip

Although maybe if he has worked exceptionally hard by lugging lots of stuff upstairs.

That's it! I need hear no more...the outcome of this poll is then a resounding: "No!"

No further voting allowed...polling has closed.

I would have thought that Tesco policy would demand that their delivery staff refuse all tips.

I worked on the vans when I was at uni - most folk don't tip, about 20% of people gave £2/3, usually folk in the nicer areas were tighter!

Now that I Do like! smile

My conscience will rest even easier now that "I'm sticking to rules"! I wouldn't want to get anyone into trouble.

"usually folk in the nicer areas were tighter!"

Always been the case. I have had a couple jobs where tips were customary and it was always the customers who looked like they needed the money more than you who were most generous. There were a few occasions where I flat out refused to accept tips from some people.

As the saying goes, they didn't get to be rich by giving their money away!.

My partner has only used them once.

Unfortunately it was just before a party, and she discovered that Tesco's had rather messed up our change of address. Tried to deliver it to our street, but another village about 13 miles away. We were consequently well outside the delivery area of the store who had the order.

After I got grumpy they were prepared to send the driver from the other end of his patch - about 30 miles I reckon. It would have been a tad late so it was agreed for the next day.

Guy duly turned up, in the morning, including a box of Thornton's as an apology. Unfortunately he forgot to deliver one bag, and had to come all the way back. oops. No tipping agreed that day.

She now will not use them,

They wont get in trouble for taking tips at the door (so now i think you should pay them!)

I was so good i got offered cash tips a few times when I worked instore, but i always had to keep saying no as i dont think taking cash off customers was within the rules. I think i did cave in once or twice tho, lol

Do you tip the postman every morning? No, he's already being paid to deliver stuff. And so is the Tesco man. I don't get paid extra for doing my job, nor a bonus for turning up on time - and rightly so.

This isn't the US and neither are the delivery men expected to bend over backwards to accommodate you (which one might do if working in a restaurant for example).

I' don't tip delivery men.

I doubt the driver is permitted to accept a tip even if you did want to give him one. We are not permitted to accept cash from a member of the public, though I'm not sure what Tesco policy is.

We don't tip, but that's mainly because we pay £5 for them to deliver...
