Bit of background story here. I had a phone call from my Dad on Saturday asking about importing new cars out of the UK to Thailand for a friend of a friend since the exchange rate is better for the Thai's. I was given a list of the following to enquire about :

Porsche Boxster all options + PDK
Porsche Cayman all options + PDK
Audi TT all options
Audi R8 all options
Merc any C or E class

So I went down to the Porsche dealership in Guildford and asked about exporting new cars out to Thailand. The jist of the conversation I had with the salesman was that it wasn't possible to export out of the country without paying the VAT, Tax, OTR etc.. then I could take it to a port and stick it in a container, get it shipped out the Thailand and claim the monies back from the Gov.

To me, this seems a really backwards way of doing things? Surely I should be able to buy a car then have it on a low loader, into a container and export out without the car touching UK roads.

Does anyone know anymore about exporting, which dealerships to talk to or offer any help?

Thanks
Hi Everyone,

I am in similar situation though this is for my own family, who are based in Macau (near Hong Kong).

Not limited to the exact Make and Model of cars as it will depend on what I can get.

But just to give you an idea, I tried a couple of Porsche dealers, including the Reading HQ, and have no luck in getting agreement to buy tax free.

I am now looking into a number of local exporting dealers who specialises in these type of services, as well as looking into German dealers. Things are so getting complicated.

May I ask if anyone has experience in dealing these sort of things?

Much appreciated.

Joseph.

If you can prove your entitlement to tax free (New means of transport or overseas VAT number) it's easy to do. Register at the local VRO with a temporary registration and take it out of the country.

You'd then be liable for duty at the prevailing rate on import to the country of destination.

Yes. But the problem is many car dealers in the UK are reluctant to sell the car tax free.

All the major manufacturers have a dealer who specialises in tax-free sales. I've bought and Mini and an Audi S4 tax-free to bring to the Netherlands in the last few years without any hassles.

Some ideas:

Audi - their tax free stuff is run from Watford Audi - http://www.auditaxfree.co.uk/
BMW/Mini - based in BMW Park Lane - http://www.bmwtaxfree.co.uk/
Mercedes - http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content/unitedking...
Nissan - http://www.chorleynissan.co.uk/nissan-export.asp

etc

Are cars any different to any other goods?

The sale is still taken place in the UK. I used to work in retail, any items going abroad were sold inclusive of tax with a form filled out for the owner to claim the money back when taking the goods out of the country.

And while each item has tax added to it, you don't pay it on a per item basis to the gov but on turnover.

A bit like companies who are VAT registered, they can by a vehicle or an item for business use and claim the VAT back, but they can't just pay less for it initially.

Would be interested to know more though.

300bhp, I am looking more at buying a car through the Personal Export Scheme, where you can buy a car tax free directly, without the need to claim back afterwards. You can do this providing you will be exporting the car after you purchase the vehicle.

Guys, thanks for the referrals. Very much appreciated. Others, please do let me know if you know of anymore helpful dealers / agents who can help on this matter. I am particularly looking at high value sports cars.

Regards.

For exports of a new vehicle to another EU member state, the process is easy and dealers have no problem with selling net (provided that the buyer makes a binding undertaking to C&E to export within 2 months and report to vehicle's new tax authority).
I wouldn't know if they differentiate between EU members and non-members, but for a dealer to sell net for export would not be a novel experience to them.

Unfortunately most dealers don't realise that the onus would be on the purchaser if they didn't subsequently pay the VAT because they had decided not to export the car.
This scares a lot of them so they just say they won't do it because it's out of their comfort zone.

No surprise, but all the dealer would have to do would be to make one phone call to PCGB, with whom I dealt. I suppose that's too much trouble for some of them.
