The speedo on my Chimaera does not work. In fact it has never worked since I bought the car a few weeks ago. The seller said that it had worked intermittently and finally completely stopped. The car is a 1996 with Sensor on the Diff. I have removed sensor and cleaned Driveshaft teeth and then reset gap to 5 thou. However still not working. Checked all the fuses, all OK.
Reading through other threads on this subject it seems that the most common cause of a non functioning speedo is a faulty sensor. However, I do not want to buy a new unit only to find that the speedo still does not work. Is there a method to test the sensor??

I had an intermittently faulty rev counter on a Cerb and it was diagnosed as just a loose spade connector which just involved removing the dash board to fix.

I wonder if you could just just a cheap momentary push button switch to generate a pulse to test if it is a fault sensor, assuming that is all it does. Or would it wokr jackaing the car up and putting a meter across the sensor whilst turniung the drive shaft and seeing if the sensor is picking up this movement.

No not really as the sensor doesn't have an output that can be measured or detected by a multimeter. Using a switch to close the sensor contacts does nothing.

I got fed up with faulty sensors and not being able to tell if the faults was with the speedo or sensor so I developed a microprocessor controlled digital unit and put some diagnostics into the interface unit that allows you to check the speedo and sensor unit is working. See here.

Had a similar problem on mine when I first got the car - got it working by moving the sensor as close as poss, without touching. Found that the 5 thou was too big a gap. From memory, also had to bend one of the trigger fins slightly as it could touch the sensor, when the others cleared it.

If I replace the sensor with a switch, will this test the ECU / Speedo? I intend to use an old distributor as the switch which will enable me to open / close at approx 25 cycles per second.

The Steve Heath sensor is sold with seperate diagnostic unit to test the speedo unit, but I will have spent my money and might not have fixed the problem.

I want to avoid buying a new sensor, only to find the speedo still does not work, and that the fault is elsewhere.

Any feedback on my distributor switch proposal would be much appreciated.

Using a switch won't work as I said before. Been there, tried that etc

If it was that easy, I wouldn't have spent the time and development putting the diagnostics into the unit in the first place!

I too could not get my speedo to work. Tried it at 10thou then 5 thou, then as above, as close as poss, obviously turning the diff by hand to check it didnt touch anywhere, now the speedo works perfect. Its worth tying various different distances before you purchase a new one.

Simplest route would be to replace sensor. I think if you speak to a TVR garage they'll confirm they often go pop.

Does the odometer still work? I have a spare speedo here that works the odo but the needle does not rise...

Athlon - Neither Speedo nor Odo are working. Thanks for the offer.

I put a meter across the connector that links to the sensor and got zero volts. I have already pulled all the fuses and visually checked them as OK. Steve Heath's 'bible' shows that the Reverse Light is on the same power feed circuit, but my Reverse Light works OK. (All other electrics work OK also).

Any suggestions as to why I get no power at the Sensor connector much appreciated.
