fancyplates are fine, their website, or rather the ordering system is balls though.

You have to show your V5 anywhere in the UK that supplies plates now, be it halfords, motor factors, all of them. The ones that get around it aren't based in the UK, usually ireland.

Another thumbup for Fancyplates. Used them twice, plates turn up in a few days, but yes the order process leaves alot to be desired !!

Fancyplates seems a good bet and their site is pretty easy to use.

Showing the V5 is a counter-fraud measure to make it more difficult to clone cars, copy plates etc. smile

Technically you are supposed to provide your V5 & proof of identity i.e passport/drivers licience to anyone who makes number plates. The number plate has to have the name & postcode of the business that made the plate.

There was a duplicate form that had to be filled in by the plate maker noting the information that was taken. The plate maker keeps one copy & the other was sent to the DVLA.... I am not sure if this still happens though.

The law was introduced to try & prevent the cloning of cars & the use of false plates on cars used in robberies etc. The idea being that the cop would then be able to trace where & who the plates were made for. However this did not stop the organised gangs buying their own number plate making gear from abroad.

I buy from Craigs plates all the time. They are very good.

If you aren't keen on sending docs then just order them as display plates. They can be bought exactly the same styles as a BS plate but just don't have the BS number on them.

this way you get a std plate without the hassle of sending docs away.

With regards to securing your new plates i had problems a year or so ago, (when for a number of reasons i couldnt get the griff in the garage), when being stuck out in the rain for a few weeks the rear plate would simply drop off due to water ingress around the sticky pads provided. The solution which is still working fine today, was i purchased some 3M heavy duty velcro hooks and eyes. four lenghts around the aperture and four lenghts along the inside edge of the plate and hey presto, a plate not affected by water, and can be removed as required and refiited no problem allowing access to the plate bulbs and release etc. Just make sure that the paint work around the inside of the aperture is free from dirt, grease, and excessive wax build up before applying. it does take 72 hours to cure but worth the effort.
