I'm sure I've read about this before but a search has revealed nothing.

We bought a car recently from main dealer and the finance (and therefore ownership) is in my Wife's name, as is the insurance (11 years no claims) with me as a named driver.

The V5 came through yesterday with my name on it instead of my Wifes. We immediately called the insurance company, to let them know of the mistake, who have temporarily changed the 'registered keeper'.

So what now? I've informed the dealer and I'm giving them some time to come back with a response/solution but in the mean time what's the situation?

- Will they amend the V5 to my Wife's name?
- Will this then add another 'owner' to the car?
- Should I avoid this (lower the value in some strange way)?
- Insurance in my name is more expensive so we don't want to do that

Thanks for your advice. I thought about popping this in SP&TL but didn't think it was really a legal issue

Insurance doesn't have to be in the same name as the owner on the V5.

Rather than speaking to the dealer, you may want to speak to the DVLA (I've always found them very helpful with things like this), as they are after all the people who look after the details printed onto a V5 smile

Reiterate to the DVLA it was a mistake - or the correction will add a keeper.

If the mistake was by the dealer, get them to do the running around.

I agree but it asks for the 'registered keeper', i.e. the name on the V5. Some insurance companies insist on the main driver being the registered keeper to stop fronting

Thanks, I'll wait to hear from the dealer (get them to do some running around - they've already annoyed my wife on a seperate matter, but that's for another day wink). If I get nowhere then I'll get in touch with the DVLA.

Thanks for the advice.

There is a form available from the Post Office for errors on V5Cs.

Nice one, I was expecting a PITA administrative nightmare but if there is a form then it's maybe going to be easier to sort out.

Both our cars are in my name and I thought about registering wifey's new car in her name. My insurer (LV=) told me that for a husband and wife it makes no odds whose name the car is registered in.

Makes no odds to the premium or makes no odds when they try and wriggle out of paying a claim though?

I have recently been getting quotes for insuring my car which, due to the arrival of a company car, my wife is now the main driver of. All the proposal forms request info on owner, registered keeper, proposer, main driver and named drivers.

It may not be an issue (particularly been husband and wife) but I would want to make sure all of this info is spot on as I would not want to have an issue in the unfortunate event of a big claim.

I think we'd just like the V5 to be right and the insurance to be as we originally intended. I don't want any reason for the insurance company to turn down a claim due to them deeming the insurance to be invalid.

I don't trust the buggers!

Makes no odds to anything - NCB, premium, main user, type of use.

I've never heard of LV trying to wriggle out of a claim. The one time we have claimed it couldn't have been easier, and they even waived the excess.
