Ferrari P4/5 Competizione In Build

Evocative Ferrari special heading for Nurburgring next year

What do you do when you have a one-off Pininfarina-bodied Ferrari based on one of the final Enzos and you want to take it racing?

It's not a question most people will ever be in a position to ask, but James Glickenhaus, owner of the thoroughly gorgeous $4m Ferrari P4/5 (right), has and the answer he has come up with is simply to build another one.

Rumours of the P4/5 Competizione surfaced last autumn, and the car is now finally in build, with plans pencilled in for a race debut in the EXP1 class at the Nurburgring 24 Hours in 2011.

So just how do you create a Ferrari P4/5 Competizione? We dropped James (a long-time PHer) a line to find out. Turns out you get an ex-racing GT2-spec Ferrari F430, and throw most of it away except for the engine, gearbox and suspension. Next you take a US-spec Ferrari F430 Scuderia and engineer it to take the GT2's running gear.

Finally, you re-design the P4/5 body to fit the new car's dimensions, and to make it suitable for racing. Simple really...

Glickenhaus tells us that the P 4/5 Competizione is being designed, engineered and built by LM Gianetti and NTechnologies, under the direction of Paolo Garella, the chap who headed the P4/5 team at Pininfarina.

When the P 4/5 Competizione's racing career is over, the plan is to modify her to make her fully road legal. Wonderful.

Sounds like a rather complicated way of doing things, I wonder why they didn't just base it on the GT2 instead of putting the bits from the GT2 into the road car? confused Is it simply a case of making it easier to become road legal?

Hopefully the body re-proportioning won't spoil it, can't wait to see the results!

Fantastic - can't wait to see the finished product.

Does anybody recognise the program that the screenshot was taken from? I'm curious to know what software such a company uses.

That car at the top is hideous.

Ok typed that and found a picture from the side and it's not so bad. Still i can think of better uses for 4 million. I could pretty much create my perfect garage for that including the cost of building said garage.

Honestly, some people have more money than sense.

Clearly he is oblivious to the fact that he could have saved a lot of wedge and bought a Toyota MR2 and fitted a replica Ferrari bodykit to it instead.

I like it but why has he gone down the F430 route?

I think he should have stuck to basing it on an Enzo, he's spending an awful lot of money but I feel basing it on the F430 cheapens it slightly and could end up looking a little odd!

If your going to make a bespoke F430 race car then I think he should go for an all new design and not reproportion the P4/5 to fit.

But then I don't have a couple of Squillion to squander so what do I know?!?!

Amusingly, I literally not ten minutes ago saw one of those MR2s dressed as a Ferrari.

Can't wait to see the end result of this mish-mash of Ferrari mechanicals, at least it will be more visually pleasing than the FXX.

maybe a stupid question but why take the running gear out of a GT2, put it into a scud and modify that?

wouldn't it be simpler to just modify the GT2 seeing as it's being built for racing?

I have the pleasure of seeing one of these rare beasts (chassis number 004 I believe) EVERYDAY on my commute to work.

One day it will be mine....... And I'll push it off the nearest cliff.

Twice.

I wonder if the 430 parts are homologated and the Enzo ones aren't? I know the MC12 has FIA GT1 homologation, but there is no Enzo actively racing at the moment to my knowledge.

Glickenhaus is lucky enough to own the P3/4 and the P4/5. Lucky guy and fair play to him.
