Specsavers varifocals - numbers showing on lens?

My other half has just gone over to varifocals, from Specsavers. I'm in charge of specs cleaning, he's useless at it. So I gave them a clean, then looked through to check - there's numbers imbedded into the lens, just off centre of the lens (horizontally) and about midway (vertically).
Surely that can't be right, can it?

Every varifocal lens has a series of engravings on them to allow identification of model and manufacturer and allow the setup to be checked.
Some are more obvious than others but you won't see any of them when you are wearing the spectacles. They are outlined in a marker when the lenses are new and this is indeed removed once alignment has been checked but not with meths. Please don't use meths on your lenses. Some might be ok others definitely won't. It'll be an expensive exercise.

Everyone has them on every pair of varifocals, standard practice. It annoyed me like hell, especially when watching the telly, I could see numbers. My eyes were drawn to them. Having them treated with 'anti glare' helps a bit. The opticians said to me ' oh you will get used to it, the numbers are there to help us identify what strength of lenses and what positioning you need.'
Upshot is, I went to contact lenses and reading glasses.

Mind you, getting the right varifocals from Specsavers deserves a thread all of it's own. It took three years and about five pairs of lenses before a new optician told me my prescription just was not suitable for anything more than just occasional reading, and definitly not hours with a book. Nobody else pointed that out.

2 - a symbol on the other side tells you what lens and brand of varifocal has been used.
