Good morning!

I have just imported a wedge into NZ and have been told today that before I can register it on the road here that I must provide details of what the VIN number means.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction???

Have you spoken to Jim Gamsby?

I only had to fit a high level brake light for mine - do you have all the UK paperwork?

Hope this helps:-

Is your wedge pre or post March 1985 as the chassis numbering system TVR were running with changed. If post March 85 this is what the numbers mean.

Example:-

SA9DH28PXFBO19433

S=made in UK
A=less than 500 made per annum
9= not sure
D= body type D for drophead F would be for fixedhead coupe
H= Weight class 3001-4000lbs GVW
28 = engine size. Would be 35 for v8.
P = Fuel type petrol
X = VIN verification check digit
F = Manufacturing year F=1985, G=1986, H= 1987 etc
B = Manufacturing plant B=Blackpool
0 = International code designating TVR 280i and 350i fixed
1 = head and drophead. TVR Engineering Ltd, Bristol Ave
9 = Blackpool Lancs FY2 0JF

433= Sequential build number.

I got this from Graham Robson's book TVRs Volume 2: Tasmin to Chimaera.

Thanks Mark, yeah I spoke to Jim earlier and he is going to decode it for me so hopefully problem solved!

Got all the paperwork although I wasn't told about the export certificate which has held things up.

Where did you physically put your brake light???

Thanks Broadside!

It's a 1990 400SE, what you've got above is pretty much what I've discovered although I'm pretty sure the 'B' is actually the build month so in this case Feb, I have an 'F' which would be June.

I didn't have an export certificate, I just brought it in with my furniture!

I was going to get a moulded high level brake light bolted to the boot lid but didn't want anything permanent so I have a temporary arrangement as advised by the testing station! They said to put it on for the WoF as the car never needed one when originally manufactured but needs it to satisfy the WoF only.

It's a thin LED like this one that I connected into the existing wiring. It is mounted on the body between the rear roof part and the boot lid with the adhesive pads! I haven't bothered taking it off this year.
