Possibly Jupiter, it seems to have been sharing the same bit of sky as the moon quite a bit recently. I never realised it could be so bright.

Don't think it's Jupiter as this will have already moved across the sky through the night (it's visible in the evening).

I may be wrong about this though as i've only been properly into astronomy since summer smile.

I asked about this bright light a few weeks ago on here. Thought it was Venus but someone mentioned it could be Sirius (I think it's Venus though). Looks ace doesn't it. Planning to get up in the morning and set my scope on it for the first time! smile

Its been on BBC News24.
The astronauts on the International Space Station have got their foglights on. They say it helps to illuminate space debris on the twisty narrow inter-planetary back roads. And they look cool.
They are now thinking of fitting some dodgy aftermarket HIDs but are worried that they might not pass the MOS test.
Captain Chavski said " Look, I'm fed up of all the whinging. What with all the Lycra space-suited lunartics coming the wrong way out of the wormholes and ignoring the Northern Lights, not to mention all the 42,000 mph everywhere brigade and the middle orbit morons, and this time of the siderial year you need to adapt your drive system you know. And clean ALL the cosmic dust off the viewing port.
Anyway, I... (bleep-bleep_bleep) sorry, just let me answer this text.....Right... must dash. The ISS is booked in at Moon Tune for a remap. You can all eat my st. Save me chucking it out the airlock."

The moon changes its position every night as it carries out its monthly revolution around the earth. Therefore, each night it will appear with slightly different background stars behind it. This morning it would have passed near to Venus in the sky (about ten days ago it passed near to Jupiter).

All the planets and moons and most of the asteroids in the solar system lie on the same plane (called "the ecliptic") which means that they often seem to pass close to each other as they trace out their own individual paths around the sun. When they appear together in the sky, it is reffered to as a "conjunction" and can be quite a beautiful sight.
