Are there any driving jobs for 17/18 year olds (Apart from pizza/food delivery) out there?

Preferably something that requires more driving than it does stopping/delivering. So something that means traveling long distances.. the less interaction with other people the better smile

Around 20k would be nice but after doing some research it might seem a bit too hopefull? If there's something that requires flexible/long working time that's fine, I don't mind working nights/weekends/Christmas/New Years/Bank Holidays/365days a year/etc.

If there's any non driving jobs that doesn't require qualifications and doesn't include a lot of "Human-Interaction" then that would be ok.. although driving is something I would enjoy more..

So, any recommendations/advice/tips greatly appreciated!

Thanks! smile

I'm guessing insurance would be the main restriction here, as most business policies required a minimum age of 21.

I highly doubt anywhere will hire an 18 year old to drive, the insurance probably stop that.

I'd imagine joining one of the armed forces would be the best way forward.

Don't really want to join the armed forces, I don't mind what I drive I just want the money smile

What about courier? I can work flexible hours and I can get my own veichle/insurance.. After some research it seems that most people that are looking to become couriers are 'mums' who want part time job between 10am - 3pm.. or just generalyl people looking for part time work that wouldn't be available at all hours..

A mate with Class 1 HGV struggled to get much more then min wage and only having night away payments from home made up the difference so a 17/18 years getting 20K isn't going to happen.
Price up the insurance on a van / lorry yourself and that is what any employer is going to also be looking at if employing you. Ask yourself will they pay several thousand a year in insurance for yourself or would they rather employ somebody more mature / experienced who will cost them far less to insure.

What about taxi driving ? Get your PSV and bus driving ? Buy a van and be a self employed courier ? Fork lift operator ? Basically anything to earn money, have a history of driving, even a fork lift, as full time employment ready for when you are a few years older and can then prove to employers you aren't such a high risk.

Taxi

ETA, my mate has been a Plant Machinery operator since he left school.

Even back then- as an apprentice, it was good money & he's still paid quite well smile

If you're only 17 or 18 years old and that is the extend of what you want to do with your life then armed forces wouldn't be for you anyway. Courier work is fk all money and I'd doubt anyone will touch you before 25 directly or through agencies.

Driving plant as someone suggested might be better but again it isn't happening overnight when you're young.

any driving jobs that i have seen advertised is normally a minimum age of 25 or 5+years driving experiance mainly due to the insurance im guessing.

are you looking for this kind of job purely because you enjoy driving your car and looking to get to do it for sumone else???

To the guy that said Taxi, really? An 18 year old can drive a taxi? I'm sure I read that you pretty much have to be 21 or 25 because you need a special type of insurance? I could be wrong but I'm assuming you wouldn't say anything without actually knowing for a fact that it's true? wink

I'm only looking for a job for 5-8 years 10 years at a max, if there's a job out there that pays 15k then surely I could work slightly longer hours and a lot more days and that would take it to 20k?

The reason I want to do a driving job is, well.. I wouldn't say I have a 'Passion' for driving, but it is something I would greatly enjoy doing over sitting behind a till. Basically it's something where I'm for the most part not interacting with other people (Yes, i'm a loner)

The only way you're going to make a decent living through driving is working for yourself.

Your written English appears good so there's a chance you're a presentable young chap. Perhaps look into legal document courier work?

Your age and associated insurance costs are going to be very high. I'm sure you're aware of this already though.

In his op he said he stated that driving is not required but would prefer it. Just sounds like he doesnt want to work with people and probably doesnt have much qualifications.

TBH I dont see you managing to find anything which would get you up to £20K a year... Most graduates nowadays will only be getting just over £20K/year. To give you a rough idea, I was on placement for 1 year and only ended up earning £12K a year for 40 hour weeks in a job which required people skills, IT skills and a whole range of other skills.

If youre just leaving school then your best bet would be to try and find an offshore company willing to put you through your training to be an offshore tech... That way you'd probably manage to earn roughly £20K/annum. Many of my friends left school to go straight into training for offshore.

A bit of a random first post IMO...

I doubt you'll get a taxi licence at that age never mind insurance (they will laugh at you buy the way) and no operator would employ someone with no driving experience, again insurance.

I'd be very surprised you'd find any driving work at that age. An employer is just not going to risk his vehicle, no matter how good a driver you may well be you still don't have experience.

Insurance is crazy for 18 yo's at the moment, I dread to think what a commercial policy would cost, even more so if it's a commercial vehicle. Add in rising fuel prices and many companies who have established distribution networks and it really doesn't seem that attractive a path.

Best bet is something like bus driving. Metroline will look at anybody 18+.

OP, you want a job driving because you enjoy it.
Will you still feel the same several thousand miles of traffic jams, delays a few years later?

Actually joining the armed forces could be a good thing for you. Join the RAF say as a MT driver, you'll get HGV trained, fuel bowser driver, all the fuel handling qualifications you need, various licences, opportunity for offensive/defensive driving. Get the experience, then come out, not only would you have had a good laugh and good time in the forces, earned a good wage up the pay scale, you'll be prime employment material for say fuel transportation or hgv driving and the civvie wage that goes with it.
