Would you go back and pay it? I think my conscience would make me to be honest.

Reason I ask is that a few of the guys have just come back from a restaurant - they asked for seperate bills and were provided with them. One of them took a phone call outside and gave his bill to another colleague and asked him to sort it out if they want to leave before hes back and that he would reimburse.

Colleague got up, left this guys bill, allegedly just 'forgot' to pay it and they walked away. As they walked through the door of the office colleage 1 says "How much do I owe you" and colleague 2 says "oh s**t sorry mate, I didn't pay it".

I said they'd prob track him down as they have card details of all the other members of the party - if they were inclined to do so.

I'd go back and pay for peace of mind, this guy seems to see it as a £20 bonus!

My in laws took the whole family out for their parents anniversary.

Went to a local (quote posh) hotel. 12 of us having a meal, then their parents staying the night.

Hotel offered to send a bill after a few days. After a week, no bill had arrived, FIL rang to query and they had no idea what he was talking about, no records of names for meal or the room.

After FIL protesting for a bit, the hotel refused to take any money off him and explained he must be ringing the wrong hotel.

Result is a £1000 bill not having to be paid, FIL buying a new tv, guilt free. biggrin

Oh, and no, I wouldn't go back :P

Ring up and pay it over the phone.

Not doing so makes you a thief.

Reminds me when I used to work at a restaurant a group of teachers helped themselves to the wine in the wine chiller near thier table while all the waiting staff were busy..

Needless to say it was moved a week later smile

If it was me i'd go back and pay

At the restaurant I used to work at, we would usually take a swipe of the card if they wanted to run a tab and if a customer 'forgot to pay' we'd just use the card details to pay off their bill. Happened fairly often, especially with first-time customers who thought they could get away with it furious

He hasn't done. Using an excuse of 'being too busy'.

Ah well. It's done.

Chances of them tracking him down??

Stupid thing is its a restaurant that we've all been to before and that any combination of people from the office will probably go to again.

I'd go back and pay it, or at least phone up.

Is it theft though? My understanding of the prices are they are a recommended price for the food, but if you are not happy to pay that, you pay what you think its worth. Any truth in that?

I'd tell someone if my food wasn't any good, not eat it all and not pay.

Fairly good. There'll be someone in the company with a grudge. They'll tell the restaurant owner. He'll call the cops. He did it. So he'll get done!

I was visiting my sister in France once. Sat outside a bar, having a couple of drinks.
My sister had left before us for a dr's appt. We just got up and left thinking she had paid. We realised later we hadn't paid, so went back. They were fine and we had more drinks.

It's dishonest to not pay if you've taken from them. It's not hard to understand.
Not as dishonest as the person (out of a group of friends), who took £40 from my friends house on Christmas eve. Good idea who it was too, stupid tt.

I ate at a rather nice Indian restaurant with my girlfriend, and just as as we were getting ready to ask for the bill, the terrorism alert recording came on, asking everyone to leave the complex immediately. We waited outside for half an hour, because I wanted to pay the bill for what I thought was an excellent meal, while the police gave the building the all clear. When the public were let back in, we went to the restaurant, only to find the manager locking up, all the lights turned off and the table we had been sitting at cleared and reset for their evening sitting. When I explained to the manager he said just to forget it and sent me on my way. A free lunch at my favourite Indian restaurant, free of guilt and bad karma - winner!

Depending on the restaurant, the employers may stop the equivalent of the shortfall out of the pay of the waiting staff who was responsible for ensuring the bill was paid in full. So there's that on his conscience too. Low paid person stumping up for his meal. Could feasibly mean they end up working for nowt!

How would people deal with this similar situation.

A group of 15 or so employees of the same company had a meal which was paid for by one person to be claimed back on expenses. It was agreed that everyone would put in cash to cover the tip and carry on to a pub. One of the most senior people stayed to pay the bill on their credit card and then joined everyone else and bought a couple of rounds.

It turned out that this person had pocketed all the tips and used the money to buy the rounds of drinks.
