Hi, does anyone know of any decent pub/restaurant/eateries in the Basingstoke area? Nothing too fancy just good grub and beer is required!

Thanks

Not really unless you go into the main shopping centre, they have a food/restaurant place there. I work in Kingsclere which is on the way to Newbury, about 5 miles out. If you're going that way I can recommend The Star in the A339 just the other side of Kingsclere (1/4 mile only).

Do you want town centre or "out-of-town"?

The town centre has all the chain restaurants - these are all fine with Dexters probably being the best. If you head "out-of-town" there are some excellent pubs within a few miles. i recently had a superb meal at The Sun Inn.

It's under new management and, boy, you can tell.

This place is also good - less fancy which may be what you want - http://www.thegamekeepers.co.uk/

That place has a PH history as the pub we went to on the very first "Pie and Drive"...

Dexters is now a Giraffe (I'm still in mourning over the duck burger frown). Went there just before Christmas. It's fine, it's just like a Giraffe anywhere. The restaurants in that part of Festival Place are fine, but don't really have that nice pub atmosphere. Used to live in Basingstoke but haven't really been out out to any pubs there for years. The Wellington Hotel on the A33 is nice though. The Wellington Arms Hotel is lovely though smile

Star is nasty - standard Harvester fare isn't it?
Go down the A339 to Herriard, and just past is the Fur and Feathers (left hand side). New couple have taken it over, and it's really good food.
Closed Mondays though.

I haven't been here YET - but got to be worth a look..

Newly bought - changed / decorated.
They will be trying hard for new business..

My brother was the chef there 10 yrs ago.. Nice place, but just a little out the way for casual trade. Maybe the new owners are offering quality and VFM.

There's a few good pubs to eat at along the A33 between Reading and Basingstoke.

The Wellington Arms has already been mentioned, but the Jekyll and Hyde at Stratfield is good, so is the White Horse and Longbridge Mill at Sherfield On Loddon too.

Nice to know about the Fur and Feathers - I pass it everyday on the way to work and have always wondered if it was any good.

I second the Yewtree at Highclere - but not your usual pub grub or pub prices yikes
Further on from The Star towards Newbury you have the Swan. Smartened itself up a bit
in the last year.

+1 for the sun - had a couple of meals here and its brilliant - although not really pub grub! michelin star (nearly) but without the prices.

also you could try the Yew Tree at lower wield - little out of basingstoke but very good country pub

Avoid town centre chains at all costs!

My brother and family went here 30th Dec for his birthday, absolutely superb, but only 8 tables so booking is essential.

Managed to get a table last night - they've opened up the extension now, so have doubled their space!

Absolutely fantastic - but 2 of us did manage to spend £150 eek
