Hello,
Just a quick question regarding older black plastic bumpered cars where the colour has faded and gone grey. I have tried that tyre and trim blackener from halfrauds, which works on the tyres, but as soon as it dries, the bumpers go grey again, although i knew it wasnt going to create any mindblowing results, thought it would last longer than half an hour or so hehe.

So, what would you recomend to make them go black, or at least a darker shade of grey?

The car in question is a 1998 Volvo S40

Thanks! thumbup

As a Smart repairer, I use a coloured aerosol dye, to re colour them. A method which also works pretty well is to heat them with a hairdryer, give it a go!

Had this with my bumper trims - removed them and sprayed them satin black. Simplest, easiest way forward.

+1 for the hot air gun method,

start on a hidden area, work a 6 inch patch at a time, you will see a wet look appear on the plastic surface when it gets hot enough.

keep the gun moving at all times.

Dont touch the plastic till it cools as it will mark easily,

it will also burn your fingers, but if you are not sharp enough to realise this, then you shouldn't have a heat gun in the first place smile

I never believed this, but smooth peanut butter is the only way. 89p from Aldi.

It is truly amazing-if you are not impressed, I will give you the 89p back!

we use Gtechniq C4 Permanent Trim Restorer on plastic trim after wiping down with isopropyl alcohol, gives it a lovely finish.

Hope this helps.

I used Kiwi black liquid shoe polish on the black bits of trim on my Eunos, and they're still black 6 months later.

agree, the oh's ka had grey bumpers, a quick wipe over with the megs tyre dressing works so well and lasts for weeks not hours like some cheap foam spray.

Another +1 for the heat gun.. here is a pic of my black - grey - bumper after a quick pass with the heat gun... You can see how bad it was before.. Well this had heat gun, then some plastic treatment stuff and it came out as per the final picture..

Simple method i've found is WD-40 or lighter fluid. Tends to stick to the plastic for along time as well and leaves a "wet" look to it.
