Rob Garofall, the 1999 Caterham Superlight Challenge runner-up, is returning
to the championship for a fully-funded assault on the title in 2001.
The 29-year-old, who won three races in '99 on his way to a 12-point
championship defeat at the hands of Bart Hayden, has secured backing from SRS
Joinery for his drive with the Spurr Race Engineering team.
"I'm in the strongest position I've ever experienced," said
the Bedfordshire-based driver. "It's the first season I've started
racing knowing that I have the funds to finish it. Spurr is a good team and I'd
like to think I should be in with a shout."
Rob was European Pro-Kart Champion in 1996 and an occasional Caterham
Roadsport campaigner in 1998. Last year he raced in Radicals, scoring several
wins.
Garofall will have a number of strong rivals in Superlights this year. Chief
among them are last year's third-placed driver, Gerry Taylor, and his team-mate
John Gladman, the reigning Roadsport Champion.
Others to watch out for include Chris Cooper, last year's final-round winner;
double Caterham title winner Clive Richards; and returning frontrunners Stephen
Worley, Peter Mangion and Ross Maxwell.
The first round of the Caterham Superlight Challenge is scheduled for 25
March at Snetterton.
