Silent it may very well be, but the Polestar Precept concept cut through the noise at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with its sharp design and sleek silhouette. Now the EV maker has announced that it will go one better and show the forthcoming production version, called the Polestar 5, at this year’s event.
Granted, the car is still in its development disguise to hide some of the finer details of its design, but there are a few changes from the concept car that the wrap hasn’t obscured. For instance, the concept’s Rolls-Royce-style suicide doors look as though they’ll be replaced by conventional rear hinges, and Polestar appears to have switched out the wing cameras for regular door mirrors (though they could be added as optional extras). We won’t be able to spot the finer details until the wrap comes off - which isn’t expected to happen at Goodwood - but for now it seems the Polestar 5 has stayed true to the concept’s striking design.
Technical details are predictably scarce, but the manufacturer says the 5 uses a bespoke, lightweight bonded aluminium chassis that’s both easy to produce and is better for the environment. It comes with performance benefits, too, with Polestar claiming that the new platform will offer greater torsional rigidity than a “traditional two-seat sports or supercar.” Which is impressive.
Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath says the Festival of Speed is the ideal place to show off its four-door coupe in “an enthusiast environment”, suggesting the EV could pack quite a punch. He added: “Our UK R&D team is doing an amazing job developing the car, and we are proud to be able to highlight their hard work at this early stage.”
Expect some more details to emerge next week - but even without them we have high hopes for Polestar’s design-led flagship. Especially as the firm continues to head in the right direction elsewhere in the range. Having treated us to a preview of its 476hp development car last year - dubbed ‘the beast’ - Polestar has since announced that a car very much like it will make it to production as the Polestar 2 BST edition 270.
The new model packs the same twin-motor setup, and will apparently manage 0-60mph in just 4.2 seconds. You get adjustable Ohlins dampers that are bespoke to the BST, as well as upgraded Brembo brakes, Pirelli P Zero tyres and an aluminium strut bar. No pricing has been confirmed yet, but if you like what you see at FOS - where it will be showcased alongside the Polestar 5 - you can already pre-register your interest.
