Much like a Golf or a Tiguan, both the Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4 make for perfectly decent family transport - but they aren't the most exciting cars in the world. For the combustion-engined cars, that's where the R models come in; for the EVs, it'll be the GTXes.
The ID.X has only been previewed thus far, but having been revealed a couple of months ago, the ID.4 GTX is now on sale. In the UK, a range kicks off at £48,510 on the road; a GTX Max retails at £55,540. VW says the standard focuses on performance, with the Max "offering a comprehensive and compelling package of equipment."
Both models get 299hp and all-wheel drive, which means 6.2 seconds to 62mph and a 112mph maximum. Perhaps more interesting for the GTX will be the chassis tweaks, with a Vehicle Dynamics Manager (as seen in the Golf GTI) and XDS diff lock fitted as standard. For the regular GTX, a lower sports suspension set-up is fitted, the Max introducing DCC adaptive dampers as standard. VW is promising "an even more engaging drive" for the GTX - exactly what's required.
On top of the standard equipment - Matrix LED lights, 12-inch infotainment display, rear-view camera - the Max adds heated massage seats, three-zone climate control and additional driver assistance equipment. Like the standard ID.4, both can add up to 199 miles of range in half an hour if a 125kW charger plays ball, though a Max has 10 miles less in it by the WLTP test - 291 against the 301 of the regular GTX.
Francesca McGuinn, Volkswagen UK's Marketing Manager for the ID cars, said: "The ID.4 GTX Max now serves as the very pinnacle of the ID.4 range, combining the sustainability of the ID. family, the practicality and user-friendliness of the ID.4, the dynamism and performance of the new GTX lineage, and all the luxuries and conveniences that the model has to offer, in one comprehensive package. It's another brilliant all-rounder in today's Volkswagen line-up." The Mustang Mach-E AWD, at just under £50k and with better performance on paper, could probably also lay claim to being a fast, dynamic electric SUV. There might be a twin test on the way a little different to usual...
