That events on the Grand Prix circuit are fairly few and far between make them all the more special. RMA ran a track day there on Wednesday which we attended in both Dan's C63 507 wagon and a
Megane R26.R
More on those in due course but it's the track that's the focus of attention today. The fast section at the back of the circuit from Surtees and then joining back at Clearways adds so much to Brands, both literally in terms of length and as a driving experience. Hawthorn Bend is a fast and challenging right hander, the entry to Dingle Dell is blind and the camber at Stirling's encourages faster and faster entry speed. It's mega.
Given how exhilarating the track was in a 230hp front-wheel drive car, it must be plain terrifying an old sportscar. Come to think of it most tracks probably would have been but the long Brands layout certainly isn't easy. This video is from the 1970 1,000km, a race infamously won by Pedro Rodriguez; penalised for passing under yellow flags, he fought back from a lap down to triumph in appalling conditions.
Unfortunately this video doesn't cover the GP section perhaps as much as we would like but it still gives a good impression. And once you've seen a 917 slithering through Druids in the rain your track day exploits on either Brands circuit will never seem so heroic!
