What do you do over Christmas when you are an automotive engineering student with no licence and two cars sat on the drive? Well, those two cars turn in projects that consume a lot more time than originally anticipated.
Jmflare's Mitsubishi GTO had been sitting on his drive for seven months; he needed to sort it out to have as a daily driver until his BMW was finished. It was an all-wheel drive imported N/A automatic GTO. The idea was to just clean it up - remove the dried silt, replace damaged trim, fit some bucket seats, uprate the springs and give the interior a thorough clean.
That idea soon grew into a much bigger project; the AWD system was ditched, meaning a twin-turbo rear subframe would need to go in and the auto system to be replaced with a manual set up. A twin-turbo car that had seen better days was sourced and cannibalised. Seeing as Jmflare was going to that amount of trouble to strip both cars, why not add in the twin-turbo engine? That is exactly where his train of thought went.
The GTO will run a Methanol mixture with the aim to have 380hp+ from the standard turbos. Rear-steer was removed and the rear differential was welded up, but now the transfer case needs to be looked at as torque has doubled and it's all going to the rear wheels. That's before the planned engine upgrades...
For now, we wish you the best of luck in your exams and looking forward to seeing it at a Sunday Service. Congratulations Jmflare, your Mitsubishi GTO is our Reader's Car of the Week. Read the full build here.
