Over the past few years, Singer has gained a global reputation for 'reimagining' some of
Porsche's finest designs
. But its painfully beautiful levels of fit and finish comes at equally eye watering prices. Now the fascinating company has delved into a relatively more affordable field, reimagining the chronograph watch, with the Track1. The brainchild of Rob Dickinson, President & Creative Director of Singer Vehicle Design, and Marco Borraccino, former owner of a design consultancy in Geneva - as you would expect, nothing has been done by halves. When the decision was made to create the watch, it came alongside the foundation of a new, horologically focussed, company 'Singer Reimagined'. At the same time Jean-Marc Wiederrecht was also brought in to add his experience and technical prowess.
With a focus on far more than simply telling the time, a special chronograph movement, the AgenGraphe has been used. Unlike anything else you may have seen on a watch, "The time of day orbits the periphery of the central chronograph, cast in fascinating relief on two rotating discs that evoke the bezels of sporting timepieces throughout the ages." Meanwhile the chronograph hours, minutes and seconds are coaxially mounted in the centre of the dial making them easier to interpret. Basically, the outer numbered dials rotate through a fixed marker for telling the time, whilst the chronograph hands function in much the same way as a regular watch would, sweeping around the inner dial. All of this allows the watch to display on one dial, what would normally require four.
The 43mm watch features an automatic mechanical movement etched with the Singer Reimagined name, a power reserve of 60 hours and 10ATM of water resistance. The case is constructed from Grade 5 titanium and fitted to a black calf leather strap, with khaki green alligator lining and metal eyelets. The launch edition of the Track1 will be limited to just 50 pieces priced at 39,800 CHF (£32,173). Expensive for a watch, but very cheap for a piece of Singer design...
