SmartNav, the in car system navigation system is to be enhanced with a stolen vehicle tracking facility and a speed camera warning system.
The system currently provides traffic information by tracking your car's position and then liaising with operators at Trafficmaster. Rather than plot routes using on board computers it uses the a central system to plot your route and to take account of traffic.
The Stolen Vehicle Location service is activated when a driver notifies an operator that their car is missing (complete with crime report number). The operator will send out a tracking signal to the in car unit which then feeds back its location every twenty seconds - information which can be relayed to the police.
The other new service - Safe Speed - alerts drivers to the whereabouts of speed cameras. Beeps are emitted from the system when approaching a speed monitored area. Even better, a long continuous beep is sounded if driving above the limit.
Smartnav costs £499 plus an installation charge of £100, a £25 connection fee and a subscription of £120 a year. Safe speed is an extra £6 a month and stolen vehicle location is another £8 per month plus a one off software upgrade of £100.
