Engines come in all sorts of configurations with different characteristics. The scream of a naturally aspirated engine, feeling the whoosh of boost from an old school turbo or hearing the whine of a supercharger.
In recent years, engines have been labelled as dull and soulless with engineers working hard to lower emissions and boost fuel efficiency. So the OP of this thread asks: 'What defines an engine's character?'.
A few of you have chimed in with comments, including 'a soulless engine is one that does the job but doesn't make an interesting noise or offers any reward for pushing hard.' More the merrier!
