Back at the end of August, Ferrari announced that it was going to build
one more LaFerrari
- in addition to the 499 already produced - and auction it off. The proceeds would go towards rebuilding those parts of central Italy destroyed by this year's earthquakes. A worthy cause if ever there was one.
Last night the LaFerrari was sold by RM Auctions for $7m (£5.5m at today's exchange rate), making it the most expensive car built in the 21st century to be sold at auction. It's a one-off spec, red with a white 'dream line', a small Italian flag on the bonnet and a commemorative plaque. Otherwise it's identical to the other LaFerraris built.
There is no further comment from RM or Ferrari as yet, but let's for now enjoy a good news story for just that. Someone has just bought themselves a fantastic car, and contributed a lot of money to a good cause as well. Here's hoping the proceeds can help as many as possible.
