Plainly Silverstone Classic could not happen in 2020; a real shame, given the success of previous years, though entirely understandable in the current climate. Still, it means 100,000 disappointed attendees will have to do something else this weekend. Or it might have done if the event hadn't been cagely taken online...
In lieu of actual attendance, the Silverstone Classic organisers have put together a 30th Anniversary Party, to be aired on YouTube over the weekend. The action kicks off at 7pm on Friday night - or earlier, if you want, as the auction is being streamed as well - with Tiff Needell speaking to drivers who competed back in 1990, race highlights from the first year and a feature on the Classic's 60th anniversary shindig for the Mini in 2019.
Saturday's timetable from the video vault includes the Masters Historic F1 from 2014, the HSCC Thundersports from last year, Formula Junior, Group C and more, so it sounds well worth watching. Sunday features touring cars, a Celebrity Race, a tribute to Sir Stirling Moss and a look ahead to 2021, which will hopefully be a Silverstone Classic more like those that we've come to know and love over the past three decades.
While it won't be quite the same as the real thing, any motorsport action on Silverstone Classic weekend is to be welcomed - especially given how good the timetable looks. Plus, you won't need to worry about when sun cream was last applied; the burgers should be cheaper at home, too...
