There’s a new Ford Mustang in town. No, not the new-new Ford Mustang, which we reported on last year. This is a Shelby America Mustang - or, more specifically, the Carroll Shelby Centennial Edition. As you might gather, then, it’s been launched to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Carroll Shelby’s birth. Just 100 will be made, and the price is $49,995 - but that’s not including the base car.
It's both a mechanical and styling upgrade. Outside, this includes a Shelby grille, side skirts and rear spoiler, with 'Le Mans Over-the-top Black Vinyl Striping'. On the inside, there are unique sill plates, matts and badges, with a numbered plaque showing its limited-run numbering. The car also comes with a Shelby leather package with a silhouette of Shelby wearing his trademark Stetson on the headrests.
Technically, it’s even more appealing. The 5.0-litre Coyote V8 comes with a 750hp supercharger upgrade and Borla cat-back bespoke exhaust. The engine’s additional cooling requirements are dealt with by a bonnet vent that helps draw air through the performance radiator. The car also runs a wider front track within extended aluminium front wings, with 20-inch wheels finished in satin black shod with 305/30 tyres. The suspension modifications include new springs and sway bars, along with adjustable caster and camber plates. The brakes are OEM, but picked from the Ford Performance Pack, which means Brembo calipers up front.
“The world is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Carroll Shelby's birth, recounting his many accomplishments,” said Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American. “Though he had never flown before, he became one of the most skilled pilot instructors in the US Army Air Force. Carroll never took a single management class but created a successful team with some of the most talented drivers, development experts, fabricators and production people in the world. From his wins behind the wheel to his business successes and philanthropic initiatives, Carroll earned every victory.”
