This is it, then. After half a dozen years of production and more special editions than it’s healthy to mention, the final Ford GTs will be made very soon. As has become tradition for Ford’s V6 supercar over the past few years, this new LM Edition pays homage to some race in France you might have heard of called Le Mans.
Instead of reliving 60s’ glories, however, the LM Edition commemorates a more recent win, specifically the 2016 triumph where Ford beat Ferrari once more (and took a first, third and fourth in the LMGTE Pro). You might remember that red and blue livery, so this LM Edition will give the 20 customers a choice between either red or blue-tinted carbon details against the Liquid Silver paint.
The colour extends inside, too, with Alcantara for the driver’s seat that matches the choice outside. And all 20 LM Editions will get a 3D-printed badge made from the crankshaft of the third-placed GT. Yep, that's right: the #69 car from 2016 was disassembled, and now the crank has been ground into a powder for this LM Edition plaque, to “embed the Le Mans podium-finishing spirit into each road car.”
Though mechanically standard, with the same 660hp, twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 as every other GT, this final limited edition does benefit from a 3D-printed titanium exhaust. Look closely and you’ll see a GT LM badge manufactured using the same method.
“With innovative materials, design and engineering, the Ford GT is unlike any other production supercar,” said Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance Motorsports global director. “As we close this chapter of the road-going Ford GT, the GT LM Edition gave us a chance to inject even more heart and soul from a podium-finishing racecar, furthering the tribute to our 2016 Le Mans win.”
Ford says the deliveries of the LM will begin later in the autumn, and production will absolutely end by the time 2023 is here. Which we’ll believe when we see it, frankly, given we’ve had everything from the Alan Mann Heritage Edition to the Holman Moody Heritage Edition up to this point. Don’t rule out another limited one until that last GT is made. And then we can think about what an electrified Ford GT might be like…
