Jaguar has extended its F-Type range with a new R-Dynamic Black variant, building on the existing R-Dynamic specification with more standard kit for both four- and eight-cylinder engines, in both convertible and coupe flavours. Starting at £64,495, it temporarily increases the F-Type line-up to five variants, before it fills the space left by the First Edition, which bows out of production this year. Needless to say it's all about keeping the facelifted sports car relevant in buyers minds.
As the name suggests, the new trim level adds more black features to the exterior and interior of the R-Dynamic base, with Jag’s normally optional Black Exterior Pack now fitted as standard. That swaps the sharpened-up 2021 F-Type’s silver trim for black bits, adds 20-inch gloss black wheels and gives buyers a choice of three body colours: Santorini Black, Eiger Grey or Firenze Red metallic. Inside, Jag throws in its 12-way Windsor sports seats as standard, ebony or mars-coloured leather, set against a suede headliner. The instrument cluster also gets suede to match.
Since this is just a trim offering, there have been no technical changes to the F-Type platform itself, meaning the four-cylinder Ingenium version has 300hp and the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 (the best one) has 450hp. The latter comes in both rear- and all-wheel drive, meaning you’ve a car dressed in more black bits and a few extra options that can crack 62mph in 4.6 seconds. Obviously, this guise will add a few grand to the aforementioned starting price, although Jag only lists the entry figure for now. At a guess, add a couple of grand to the equivalent R-Dynamic’s £80,425 list.
Jaguar’s decision to expand the range somewhat contrasts its earlier efforts of simplification, which saw the old six-pot dropped, along with the red-blooded SVR. The changes did, happily for prospective buyers, lower the price for the V8 models across the board (the full bells and whistles 575hp R now costs £102,465 ), which, by the way, also all now come with a quiet-start function so you’re not forced to wake up the neighbours with every morning departure. All very mature - much like the increasingly rounded F-Type.
