A first electric SUV is a big deal for any manufacturer, leave alone Lotus, which has forged its reputation on selling the very opposite - light, small, petrol-powered sports cars. You'll probably already know that the saga has dragged on for yonks, too; the manufacturer confirmed what it was up to as long ago as 2015 - but the proposed 2019 launch date came and went. Then two years ago, CEO Phil Popham said an SUV was still a way off because it would need a bespoke plaftorm.
Well, now Lotus has such a thing, and is plainly itching to tick the Type 132 off its Christmas list in the wake of revealing the Type 131 - or the Emira, as we now know it. As the firm announced back in the summer, the SUV will be one of the cars built on the new Premium platform, with wheelbases from 2,889mm-3,100mm and batteries ranging from 92-120kWh, alongside 800-volt charging architecture. Now get the first teaser video.
'Breathe' really doesn't offer much, even to the keenest of eyes. In 15 seconds we get a look at the active grille, a woman and some words: Breathe, See, Awaken, Stretch. Which sounds more like a pilates warm up than anything to do with a car. But the grille, to be fair, looks interesting, at least as far as these things can. It's shown serving both its purposes, cooling the car and improving front aero. The electric SUV thing might not be trademark Lotus, but innovative solutions certainly are; active aerodynamics on a car like this would certainly be a welcome USP for the Type 132.
And that really is it - 38 words, 15 seconds of video and four hashtags as the first teaser for this car. But rest assured there is a virtual tsunami of things going on behind the scenes - not least the new factory and technology centre the brand is building in China to produce its new EV lineup. Expect many, many more such teasers as the Type 132's 2022 launch date nears - and a bit more old-fashioned Lotus detail, too.
